One of the hardest things about any of life's struggles is dealing with the frustration that can come with them. As with every other aspect of the struggles in life, as Christians we can turn to God and his word for help.
The Apostle Paul himself taught that the secret in frustrating circumstances was to be content in all circumstances. Let us look at what he says in Philippians 4: 11-13,
“ I am not saying this because I need anything, For I have learned to be content in any circumstance. I know the experience of being in need and of having more than enough. I have learned the secret to being content in any and every circumstance, whether full or hungry or whether having plenty or being poor.I can endure all these things through the power of the one who gives me strength.” Obviously this is one of those lessons from the Bible that’s easier said then done !
Frustration often results from a lack of patience here scripture also stands ready to provide us with wise counsel. Consider the words of Hebrews 11-12,
“But we desperately want each of you to show the same effort to make your hope sure until the end. This is so you won't be lazy but follow the examples of the ones who inherit the promises through faith and patience.”
What we see here is that patience is not a passive thing, in fact you have to work at it. It doesn't come to us automatically we must seek it out.
Scripture also teaches us that patience is a fruit of the Spirit. Let's next look at the words of Galatians 5:22-23,
“ But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. There is no law against things like this.” As Christians we were inhabited by the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation. But how often do we ignore the spirit inside us ? The Holy Spirit is God's internal ambassador inside us. If we are not listening to the Spirit we are not listening to God. If we are not listening to God then he cannot help us as much as he would like.
As with many other things God's comfort is also available to us in times of frustration. Consider these words from Isaiah 40:1
“ Comfort, comfort my people ! Says your God.”
The prophet's message here is both very short, and very powerful. God himself has commanded that you be comforted. He will be there for you in your times of frustration.
The biblical way to fighting frustration then is to learn to be content with what you have, to lean on the Holy Spirit both to strengthen your patience, and to receive God's comfort. Patience is a sign of our maturity as Christians. Therefore who should always be engaged in prayer, and the study of God;s word. By doing so we become more mature as Christians. By becoming more mature Christians we are better able to handle frustrations and the other challenges our earthly life tosses our way.
