Learning to recover from moments of stress can be a valuable tool to have. Letting go of the stress connected to a moment that has passed can feel hard and sometimes difficult, for even though the moment has passed, our bodies and minds are still replaying the event and holding onto how it felt. How then does one let go when the time has passed and there is a new moment beginning? It can be far too easy to carry the stress forward and to keep it locked into our bodies; this causes fatigue, anger, worry, discontentment, and even sickness. Our minds want to reevaluate the moment that has passed, looking at what could have been done, what should have been done, and how it should be now. This process keeps the feeling of stress alive in our minds because it keeps us focused on the moment that has passed. By doing this we are not only living in the past, but we are not present in where we are now. Letting go of stress is also about letting go of what was. Letting go of the moment that has passed, how it felt, and what you thought. We can keep replaying the moment over and over, but there is no true satisfaction or anything to be gained by doing this. All that occurs is a delayed closure with no release of stress connected to that moment. What can be dangerous about this is that every stressful moment that follows could feel like it is adding to those that have already passed. If we are living in a moment that doesn’t exist anymore, we risk not only adding more stress to the feeling of stress that we already have, but we also never relax into the moment we are in. You can see how this could keep growing and the tension and stress in our bodies and minds never fades away. We keep building it up until the point arrives where we no longer know how to deal with it. That is why whenever one feels stressed, worried, or tense, it is important to look at why and where this came from. Perhaps the feeling comes from a moment that has already passed, and if so we should allow ourselves the freedom to let go of the feeling as well. Stress never helps us, and that is why we need to let it go along with the past. It is important to remember that by being aware of ourselves, we then help ourselves feel better. We can let go of stress in our minds and our bodies by letting go of the past and the feelings connected to it.
