Math classes are difficult for most college students, especially those who are not math majors. With just about any subject outside of your comfort zone, it is normal to feel challenged at times. Even if you think your college math class will overwhelm you, there are steps you can take to set yourself up for success and pass the class.
To do your best in your math class, adopt good habits early. Passing your college math class can sometimes seem impossible, but follow these suggestions, and you may just be surprised.
How to succeed in your college math class
Take a look at our list of suggestions you can apply both before and during your math class.
1. Plan your study time
When you receive your math class syllabus at the beginning of the semester, put your major assignment in your calendar or planner. In this way, you will not be surprised by any exam dates, and you can give yourself enough time for preparation. Take time off each week to dedicate to study for this class.
Find a place on the campus where you can allow time to complete math work. If you do better in total silence, then work on the quietest floor of the library. If you need more ambient noise, try studying at a local cafe or student center. Find the place that works best for you, and commit to working on the math in the same place on a consistent basis.
2. Get out of the classroom
Always come to class prepared. Bring all recommended classroom materials from your professor lists onto the curriculum, such as calculators, pencils, a notebook, and course materials. With these tools at hand, you can take good notes and follow during lectures.
Be sure to silence your phone before class starts to avoid creating a distraction for other students. If you are working on a laptop, request to check your email or social media during class.
3. Ask questions
When you get stuck, reach out to your professor to ask questions outside the classroom. If you do not understand a concept or a specific task, you can email your professor their office hours. Professors are there to help you succeed. During class, you should ask relevant questions. Chances are, other students in the lecture hall have the same question!
4. Join a Study Group
If you are trying to do well on your own then Math class can be even more difficult. Join or create a study group so that you have the support of people who can help you - and Vice Versa. Study groups also provide accountability for your study commitments and are a great way to make friends!
5. Use online resources
There may be times when your notes and textbooks are not enough for you to fully understand a concept or solve that one impossible problem. Your professor can point you to helpful educational websites, and your textbook can provide online resources. It is also a great idea to take advantage of an online math tutor and homework services to help college students.
