What is a natural swimming pool? A natural swimming pool is a contained body water system that is chlorine-free and makes use of a plant-derived filtration system in purifying the water. It is divided into two zones, namely the swimming zone and regeneration zone. The swimming zone is a plant-free area where people can enjoy the nature scenic view while swimming. Meanwhile, the regeneration zone is where filtration process occurs through the utilization of different plant species. Do natural swimming pools use chemicals in purifying the water? No. Natural swimming pool is a chemical-free pool. There are neither chemicals nor devices to disinfect the water. They are treated naturally and biologically through the plants rooted in regeneration zone. Debris and other impurities are filtered by the plants’ roots. Yet, dead leaves and plants are removed from the water using a manual skimmer. Since natural swimming pool is a body of water, do I have to worry for mosquitoes? No. The water of natural swimming pool flows continuously; thus, formation of mosquitoes breeding sites is almost impossible. Mosquitoes only thrive in stagnant water. Are fishes, ducks and other animals allowed in natural swimming pools? No. Natural swimming pools should contain little amount of nutrients in order to sustain the system. Higher nutrient content puffs algae growth and will turn the water cloudy. Can I drink the water from natural swimming pool? Most of the times, yes. The water from natural swimming pool is clean and safe. Because it works with nature and it’s chlorine-free, bathing on natural swimming pool does not dry and irritate your skin compared to the salt water of beaches. How can I preserve the beauty of natural swimming pools? Just like other pools, natural swimming pools are also maintained. Dead plants and leaves must be regularly skimmed; otherwise, they become unappealing to the eye. At the same time, dead plants decompose and add up nutrients to the water. Also, plants should need to be trimmed on or before fall, so they will not drop off in the pool. Are natural swimming pools pricey compared to traditional pools? Initially, yes. Natural swimming pools are quite expensive to build. Considering there are two zones and utilization of plant species, the overall cost of building natural swimming pools is high-priced. However, it becomes cost-effective over time due to lesser need for maintenance. Unlike traditional pools, which uses chlorine daily for disinfection, annual draining of water and manual cleaning on the pool (such as brushing the wall), the purification processes of natural swimming pool are all done by plants and by just a skimmer.
