Nobody likes frizzy hair. It makes every day a bad hair day. Unless you’re going for that just out of bed look (which, by the way, real-life men actually hate), frizzy hair is a definite no-no.
But how do you get rid of it?
Causes of frizz
Frizzy hair happens when too much natural oil and moisture are removed from the hair. As a result, the strands become coarse, dry, and difficult to brush.
Frizzy hair can be a genetic trait; it can also be caused by applying too many or too strong chemicals to your hair. These chemicals can dry out your hair and weaken the strands, resulting in breakage and frizz.
Shampoo can be one of these chemicals. Of course, in our culture, we can’t really feel clean if we don’t shampoo every day, or at least three times a week. But that does not change the fact shampoo – the wrong kind – can be causing your frizz.
Exposing your hair to intense levels of heat, such as the heat from curling irons and blow driers, also damage the strands.
Getting rid of the frizz
Since the main cause of frizzy hair is the absence of moisture, the best remedy is to apply conditioner at least three times a week. Stars with gorgeous hair, like Jennifer Aniston, condition their hair every day and have an intense conditioning treatment once a week.
Look for conditioners with ingredients such as aloe vera, vitami
E, and panthenol. These ingredients not only moisturise your hair, they provide nourishment that restores your hair’s natural shine and strength.
To get the full benefit of your conditioner, allow it to stay on your hair for at least five minutes before rinsing it off with water. Point the shower nozzle on your scalp, because it is your scalp, not the hair ends, you want to rinse off thoroughly. A little conditioner left on your hair ends helps prolong the effect of the conditioner and protects you from split ends.
Improper hair drying also contributes to frizzy hair. Remember your hair strands are very fragile when wet. Rubbing your hair dry with a towel – and even worse, brushing it! – will cause your hair strands to break and make your frizz even worse.
The best way to care for wet hair is to air dry it without combing. Use your towel only to blot out the extra moisture so you don’t drip all over the floor, but do it gently. Just loosely wrap the towel on your head and let it absorb the moisture. Do not rub your towel aggressively on your hair. Excessive friction leads to hair breakage.
Blow driers are a complicated issue. They tame frizz – but they cause it too. The heat damages the hair, resulting in frizz we need to blow dry out, resulting in dry hair and more frizz later on.
It’s a vicious cycle, and it’s one that’s hard to get out of.
If you are at the point when you can no longer avoid using a blow dryer, minimize the damage. Make sure to use the dryer only when excess water has already been absorbed in the towel. This would lessen the amount of time the hair is subjected to intense heat.
Not all blow dries are bad, by the way. A new hair treatment called the Brazilian blow dry actually seals moisture into your hair rather than takes it out. Ask your stylist about it, and give yourself the gift of frizz-free hair!
