How to Brew the Perfect good tasting cup of Green Tea- and Get Hooked!
Adapted from AICRIf you made green tea and experienced bitterness, perhaps you brewed it in too hot of a water temperature, and for too long. Here are some tips you can use to make delicious green tea that may get you hooked and you’ll never look back to any other beverages.
Type of Water: Some experts prefer filtered tap water because many bottled waters contain less oxygen, an important factor in making green tea. Ideally, the teapot and teacups should be warmed in hot water before using.
Water temperature: The higher the water temperature, the more bitter and astringent the taste of the tea can become. Bring the water to a boil, immediately remove from heat and allow it to cool 1-3 minutes, depending on the amount of water used, until the steam drifts sideways rather than rising straight up. Never boil the water in an aluminium pot, which can ruin the taste.
Brewing time: If you are only making one cup of tea, you may not need to brew your tea for more than 30 - 45 seconds; for 2-4 cups, 1-2 minutes. Experiment with brewing times- the more delicate the tea, the less steeping time is needed, and the sweeter the tea will be.
Teapots and Cups: Do not ever steep the tea in teapots or cups made of plastic or aluminium, which badly affect the taste. A good choice of teapot is glass, so you can monitor the strength of the tea. China or porcelain cups are most commonly used in China and Japan, or clear glass mugs to enjoy the delicate color of most green teas.
Ideally, tea should be made in a teapot with loose tea to allow enough room for the leaves to “blossom,” or open, and move through the water. Although an infusion basket or tea ball can be used for a single serving, it should be large enough for the leaves to unfurl.
