I recently attended the Get Motivated seminar in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and I have to say that it was an awesome experience. The day is filled with speakers from Fortune 500 companies, educators, business owners, salespeople, professional athletes and more. The speakers that stuck out in the mind the most were Zig Zigler, Colin Powell, and the Get Motivated Seminar co-founder Tamara Lowe.
Zig Zigler had recently fallen and is suffering from short term memory loss. He is also around 85 years of age. Nevertheless, he was just as infectious as he has always been! It was so inspiring to see him in this condition doing his life's work of motivational speaking. One thing that I took away from his speech is how important it is to encourage others. In his words "Encouragement is the fuel for which hope runs." He also said that spoke about love and marriage. In his words "Always have the home court advantage in your marriage by keeping up the courtship. In a love marriage always make all your decisions together." These are truly some words to live by. They also showed a video of his life and a video of some of his most loved stories. It was great seeing the legend while he is still living.
Colin Powell spoke about his life since being out of government. He says that the only thing that he misses is his government airplane! He joked that now that Hilary has it he will never get it back! It was nice getting to see his personality now that he is in a more relaxed state of mind. I was surprised at how personable he was seeing that when he was in government we only saw his serious side. He spoke about what is takes to be a good leader. Some of the characteristics of a good leader are:
*Leaders should be Infectious
*Leaders should always put followers in the best possible environment
*Give followers what they need
*Let followers know that you appreciate them
*Be Inspiring
*Be a Disciplinarian when someone not pulling his or her weight
*Train followers well for the job they are supposed to do
He said that if you have been a good leader your followers will follow you if only out of curiosity.
Tamara Lowe spoke about Motivational DNA. She says that there is no such thing as an unmotivated person. Each person is just motivated differently. From her research she has found that people are motivated by Drives, Needs, and Awards. She says that most people have a Drive to either Produce or to Connect. She went on to say that people Need either Stability or Variety. Also she said that people either like Awards that are Internal or Exte
al. In order to motivate anyone you just need to find out about their Drives, Needs, and how they like to be Awarded. Find out more at www.GetMotivatedBook.com. Take the test to find out how you and your team members are motivated.
All in all it was a great seminar. My team and I will definitely attend again!

Where would I travel that I have yet to visit? What toys would I buy? And on and on. A few days ago I had a shift in my thinking. As I drove by a billboard on the side of the freeway indicating what the jackpot is this week, it occurred to me that many people who win the lottery actually end up with numerous problems that didn't exist prior to winning.
