Depending on the individual window, they can slide vertically or even horizontally.They are normally used as part of Edwardian or Victorian style buildings. They don't fall back into the closed position, which is handy. A friction track stops it from moving back and secures it in place until you use force to shut it. A significant disadvantage of sash windows are they are very easy for an intruder to get through. Without a proper way of keeping the window from sliding, a person can slide the window open from the outside. Some of the newer sash windows come with a locking mechanism to make it harder to break into, so if you are buying, make sure you get one with a lock. You could jam something into the track of the window, but the risk of damaging the window is high.
