Life coaches work with those who have goals and want support in achieving their goals. Client goals fall into all life areas and range from things other people have said they should do to the most inspiring life changing goals that come from within themselves. The goals with the best chance of being accomplished are the most inspiring goals. How do you find and set your most inspiring goals? Review the five tips below and start exploring what your most inspiring goal would be and how it could be achieved.

What Inspires You?

In order to achieve your goals they must ignite your spirit. Your goals need to move you into action. They can not be “I should…” goals. They need to be “I want…!” goals or possibly “I need…!” goals. When identifying goals think of what you want to become, to achieve, to obtain and habits you want to stop or create.

Clarify Your Starting Point

Whenever setting a goal you need to be clear on where you are starting from. Get honest with yourself. Allow yourself to be transparent with those who will support you. Set up appointments with those who can objectively assess where you are now. Gather all this information into one place so you can reference it later.

Visualize End Results

Just as when you plan an airline flight you know where you are going to, you need to know where you are going with your goals. What will the end result of this goal look like in detail? Does this goal stretch you to achieve without setting you up to fail?

Write Out a Pla

Explore your options before making a decision about what you will do. Come up with at least 5 ways you “could” achieve your goal, and then evaluate the pros and cons of each. Which options do you want to incorporate into a plan? Identify the mileposts on your path to achievement. Mileposts will break the overall goal down into manageable chunks and keep you from getting distracted. Now put all these together into a strategic plan for your success.

Identify the Character Traits and Skills Required to Achieve Your Goal

Pretend you are writing a job description for someone who will achieve this goal. If you were to hire someone to do this for you, what are the skills and character traits that you would require in your new employee? Be objective. Only after doing the “job description” assess your own strengths, talents and resources. What do you have? What can you develop and how? What do you need to “hire out”?
