Going green doesn’t mean you have to renounce all your electronics and live in a solar panel fortress. There are simple things you can do around your home that help the environment without changing your entire lifestyle. Some of these easy tricks include recycling, buying recycled and environmentally safe products, reusing water bottles rather than buying them in the store, turning off and unplugging electronics and lights when they aren’t in use, and even decorating your yard can help our home planet.
Recycling:
You’ve been hearing all the ads and seeing all the signs about recycling, but it really is as simple as they say. All you need to do is have a separate container next to your garbage can for the recyclables. Paper products, glass bottles, plastic bottles, soup cans, and many other products can be recycled. It’s easy and you don’t have to inconvenience yourself to do it!
Buy Green:
These days buying recycled or environmentally safe products is virtually a no brainer. So many companies have recognized that it’s time to give back to Mother Nature and have been producing many products that can help the environment. From recycled notebooks to biodegradable chip bags, these products are everywhere! Just do a little research online before your next shopping trip and you may be surprised at the number of items on your list that come in an eco-friendly version.
Reuse:
The amount of water bottles used in the United States on its own is enough to exhaust our fragile environment. You can still carry around a water bottle to quench your thirst on-the-go, but buying a reusable water bottle can dramatically reduce the amount of plastic waste produced each year. They are even making reusable water bottles out of recycled materials, so that’s just one more way to do your part in going green.
Reduce:
Everyone could reduce their carbon footprint. You can even find websites that will blow your mind as they calculate your personal carbon footprint. Simple steps can be taken that will turn your footprint from a T-Rex size, to a modest human size. For example, turning off lights and unplugging electronics can really make a difference. This helps the environment and your wallet, because when you use less energy, your energy bill shrinks. Try not to turn on lights during the day, or never leave the lights on when you aren’t in a room. Even when an electronic is not on or in use, it’s using electricity if it’s plugged in. You’re TV doesn’t need to be plugged in when you are on vacation and your toaster doesn’t need to be plugged in when it’s toasting bread. It’s really this easy!
Decorating Your Yard:
Okay, this category is a bit unconventional when thinking about helping the environment, but it’s worth pointing out. The style of your home and yard don’t have to suffer to save our planet. Just think before you buy. One great way you can decorate your yard and still be a friend to the environment is with a solar fountain. You’ve seen fountains before, but often times they require lots of electricity. Solar fountains are not powered by bulky electrical cords; they are powered by the sun! Simply stake the small solar panel in a sunny area of your yard and watch the fountain do it’s magic. These fountains are beautiful and will keep the Earth beautiful as well.
Going Green doesn’t have to be expensive or intrusive to your life. These simple suggestions are the perfect way to start your environmentally friendly lifestyle. It takes one spark to start a fire, so even you could be the spark that ignites the flame of the raging “Go Green” fire.
