Does your partner complain that you snore at night? Do you wake up feeling tired and irritable? If so, you may be suffering from sleep apnea. This means that while you sleep, you stop breathing for several seconds or even a minute. To find effective relief from this condition, the following article can help.

While it is common sense to avoid some things before sleeping, like caffeine, many people load up their plates and then go to bed. This is not healthy in general and can worsen sleeping issues like apnea. Avoid eating any heavy meals before going to bed and you will find yourself sleeping better.

Cut down on alcohol use. When you drink, the alcohol relaxes the muscles in your throat, making it easier for them to obstruct your airway and "collapse." Don't have alcohol within 4 or 5 hours before going to sleep to avoid this, if you want to continue to drink at all.

If you have think you might have sleep apnea or already suffer from snoring, try to use some over the counter nasal strips. These small strips attach to your nose with adhesive, lifting open your nasal passages. If your sleep apnea is related to a nasal obstruction, the strips may improve the quality of your sleep.

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, do not be shy about telling your friends and family. Sleep apnea is an extremely common condition. It is very possible that someone you know and love has it too and has not been diagnosed yet. By sharing your experience, you could help someone else realize they have a problem and encourage them to seek treatment.

If you think that you may have sleep apnea, set up a video of yourself as you sleep. Just be sure that the video recorder has sound capability. When you wake up, look at the video, and if it seems like something other than snoring is going on, it may be time to go to the doctor.

Smokers who also suffer from sleep apnea need to make a difficult decision. Research shows that smoking can worsen sleeping problems such as snoring and apnea, so those who like to light up need to really look into themselves and decide what is more important, nicotine or a great night's sleep.

Taking the time to exercise your jaw and stick out your tongue may seem like children's play. In a recent scientific study, people who performed jaw and tongue exercises daily were able to relieve some of their sleep apnea symptoms. It may not work for everyone, but could be worth a try for a good night's rest.

If nothing works for your sleep apnea, think about getting surgery. Having your tonsils or adenoids removed or some work down to your nose could make your symptoms go away. Before you get surgery, make sure you know what is causing your sleep apnea: your doctor should be able to recognize over-sized tonsils.

Once you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, it is important to pursue an effective treatment plan right away. This way, you and your family can find relief from the problems this condition can cause. Once you have been treated, you will find yourself sleeping better at night and feeling more lively and energetic during the day.
