About the Author
My first experience of doctor miss-diagnosis started with severe pain in my knee, which my doctor ‘wrongly’ diagnosed as being arthritis – “go home take pain killer and learn to live with the pain”. Foolishly I believed this until nearly twelve months later when my knee locked in horrendous pain. Fortunately my doctor was on holiday and I was seen by a locum doctor. I described my original symptoms and my current state. I could not believe my ears when she told me that it did not sound like arthritis to her and I should get a scan. The scan revealed normal wear and tear but no apparent arthritis. An arthroscopic procedure was recommended. The procedure revealed that some cartilage had broken off and was trapped in the joint – no wonder I was in pain. The surgeon tidied the joint and I was now fully mobile – without pain except for having to find £2k for the immediate procedure, which would have been avoided if I had had a correct diagnosis at the start.
My next experience was with severe pain in my back and believe it or not my doctor diagnosed arthritis or degenerative disorder. The pain grew and grew until I could bear it no longer. I revisited the clinic but saw a different doctor. She said I needed a scan. The scan revealed two herniated discs needing an operation. I was two years with the help of my local member of parliament fighting the NHS for the operation to happen during which every excuse under the sun was put at my door why they would not give authority. The excuses ranged from shortages of funds to the safety of the operation.
