Hair loss occurs for many different reasons. Some people experience hair loss due to stress, medical treatments, poor diet or certain medical conditions. However, for the great majority of men, hair loss is triggered by a genetic condition known as male pattern baldness. While women are more likely to suffer from stress- or medical-related hair loss, some women also suffer from this condition.
How Hair Growth Vitamins Work
Regardless of the cause of one’s hair loss, hair loss vitamins can be extremely beneficial. People who suffer from male pattern baldness lose their hair because of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT is a testosterone metabolite that many adults--especially men--develop a sensitivity.
When this occurs, DHT begins attaching to the hair follicles and cutting off their supply of nutrients. DHT does not directly cause hair loss. It is the lack of nutrients that forces the follicles to miniaturize and begin producing very fine hair. By using hair growth vitamins, it is possible to restore some of the nutrients needed to grow healthy hair.
People who suffer from hair loss due to a nutritional deficiency, stress or medical problems can also benefit from hair growth vitamins. Supplying the scalp with the vitamins necessary to grow strong hair can improve the quality of almost anyone’s hair. While vitamins might not reverse medical-related hair loss completely, they are a very good start.
Which Hair Growth Vitamins Support a Healthy Scalp?
Certain vitamins and minerals are known to support a healthy scalp and increase hair growth. A few examples of such nutrients are iron, zinc, pantothenic acid, vitami
A, biotin and other B-complex vitamins. These hair growth vitamins have been found to strengthen the hair follicles, help the body reduce stress, strengthen the capillaries and improve circulation. Because hair loss is sometimes due to a deficiency in one’s diet, supplementing these vitamins may strengthen the body and reduce nutrition-related hair loss.
To nourish the scalp, most hair growth vitamins contain a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize damaging free radicals, which improves the health of all bodily tissues including the scalp. Some vitamins also contain proteins and amino acids. Since the hair is primarily made up of protein, these nutrients can help the body build stronger hair.
While these nutrients are all important to hair growth, it is important to understand that hair loss is a very complex condition. In people suffering from male pattern baldness, hair growth vitamins might not be enough to stimulate growth unless they also contain herbs that block DHT. This is because DHT blocks the absorption of nutrients. Providing the scalp with additional nutrients will not do any good unless the follicles are able to absorb them. Therefore, people suffering from male pattern baldness will want to look for hair vitamins that contain know
DHT-blockers, like saw palmetto, along with other herbs and nutrients.
