One of the greatest things for small businesses today is the Internet, and of course, email. You can do a lot with email, from sending out newsletters to other forms of direct marketing. Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs tend to lose interest in this after a while, and don't always keep up with it the way they should, or they hear myths that they actually believe. Here are five myths about email campaigns that need to be debunked now: People won't notice if you start sending more emails to them: This is just not true. And, what is worse, the more emails you send out, the more a lot of people will tend to get angry and just start ignoring you, or even worse, blocking your email address so they don't have to see any more of your emails. Even if it is a holiday season, stick with your normal amount of emails to customers, no increases. People love to get email: This is not necessarily true. Sure, everyone loves to get message from family and friends, but if they are being bombarded with advertising emails, they are certainly not going to be impressed. When you first start sending out your emails, don't be surprised if you get little to no reaction. It is going to take time, even if people have signed up to receive emails from you, as they often forget they did so. Most of my email list is useless: Just like any aspect of your business, you are not going to get sales from every email that you send out. Your success rate will most likely be around 2-20%, if you are doing everything right. Keep sending them out, because even if someone is not interested today, it doesn't mean that they won't be doing business with you at a later date. You never know when someone is going to want your products or services, so you have to be constantly working at it. My friends, family members and business associates won't mind getting emails: It doesn't matter how well you know someone, it is still not a good idea to add people to your email list until you have their express permission. Treat them like you would strangers, and have them sign up before you start marketing to them. After a while, when you have a system in place to get leads and build your email list, you won't have to worry about entering anyone yourself, because they will be doing it on their own.
