One of the most common things that new clients say to me is ‘how did I get this size, I can’t believe I didn’t do anything sooner’. Along with this statement usually comes comments such as ‘I really hate myself’, ‘I’m so self conscious’, ‘I hate going shopping’, ’I feel unattractive.’
Now at some point during this journey from thin and fit to big and a walking time bomb there must have come a time when alarm bells started to ring. Nobody wakes up to see a completely different body in the morning. Weight gain is a very slow and gradual process that simply doesn’t happen ove
ight.
Perhaps it’s the weight gain side of the equation that we should be looking at in order to solve the problem instead of the after effects of being big. Certainly that’s the only way to real long term success.
But before we judge anyone for being a certain size or shape which doesn’t conform to the ‘ideal’ in both being healthy or beautiful, perhaps we should look at the most common reasons why many people end being overweight and desperately unhappy with themselves.
Firstly there are social factors involved. Perhaps you’ve come from a broken home or had a stressful upbringing for one reason or another. Maybe you formed a friendship with food at an early age that left you always using it as a means to feeling good.
Not only this but if you’re from an underprivileged family, you probably didn’t have access to the freshest and most healthy foods possible and instead were given cheaper and more highly processed foods, which set the wheels of craving high sugar/fat foods fully in to motion at an early age.
Secondly there’s the emotional side of eating. Perhaps you were bullied at school, didn’t feel you fitted in or just didn’t enjoy being in that environment. This could lead to the creation of a poor diet.
Thirdly there’s society. We’re constantly being pulled one way and another. On the one hand someone’s telling us that we need to look good so we can wear these clothes or this perfume etc and on the other hand we’re being told that eating this or that will make us full, happy or even sexy. The media manipulates us whichever way it chooses, but these messages are in our minds and unfortunately do guide us in to doing certain things.
What about exercise, weren’t you ever any good at sports, never picked in teams or just generally poor at anything physical?
These things all plant the seeds to everything that happens in later life with regards to diet and exercise. If you’ve always hated exercise and built up resentment for everything it stands for then it’s very unlikely that you’re going to cherish the thought of doing it regularly.
In a nutshell, we have to try and take control of our minds as it is this part of us that dictates everything we do or believe in whether it’s right or wrong. To truly get in to shape and be the healthy, sexy, attractive, energetic and bubbly person we’d all love to be, we need to be in charge of our minds. Once this is achieved getting and staying in great shape is as easy as abc.
