How EBay Is Making Inroads in Business

When eBay first started out several years ago, it was very much a platform for ordinary people to sell their second hand belongings. There were a few new items, but they were far from the norm.
Fast forward a decade or so, and a large proportion of the goods for sale on eBay these days are new items. There are even people who make their living being eBay traders.
EBay, for the few people who do not know, is a secure, user friendly platform that allows buyers and sellers of goods to connect, without having to share their personal or banking information. Since eBay bought PayPal, the payment processing company, this is even truer, and the various parties to a deal on eBay need know little more than each other’s use
ame, address, and email address.
EBay also has several options for the users. Individuals can still post their second hand goods for sale, either via online auction (the process that made eBay famous in the first place) or via a direct sale. Individuals can also list new items for sale, but these days, there is a limit to the number of items you can list at any particular time.
Most eBay traders choose a professional package, which allows them to create a virtual ‘storefront’ on eBay, where they can list a variety of goods, with photographs, descriptions and other information. There are several types of package available, and it is a great way to create an online store, whether you have an existing website or not, as it offers a turnkey solution – rather than having to build a store from the ground up!
EBay also offers a high level of flexibility, with storeowners being able to create stores selling everything from household goods to electronics, apparel to art, using the platform.
For the business owner or entrepreneur, eBay offers several clear benefits over a traditional web store integrated into their site.
First, and probably most importantly, there is the fact that eBay is one of the world’s most well known online sales platforms. Whereas storeowners would have to work for months or even years to build that kind of traffic to their websites, they can have a store up and running on eBay, and access to millions of buyers, within minutes.
EBay is also a trusted platform, which has a high level of security, which many smaller web storeowners may not be able to offer. That means that buyers feel secure spending their money on the site, which they might not if they were to visit a small, one off site.
Then there is the reputation that the site has as a place where visitors can find great deals on just about anything. It’s a bit of a catchall for would be online shoppers, and that means that there’s already a captive audience, so all store owners need to do is create their store, and there is a ready market for their goods – whatever they may be.
The cost, however, must certainly be the biggest benefit for a would be web storeowner. Whereas adding a web store to an existing website is often a time consuming, costly process, signing up for eBay is not. There is no need to hire a web designer to integrate complex shopping cart and e-commerce functionality with your website, and the uploading of product images and information is user friendly, which means anyone can do it.
Of course, with so much competition on eBay, if you want to make a success of your store, you will need to sell something that is unique, or a popular product at a very competitive price. If you are creating your own products, then selling a unique items should not be too much of a problem though, and with so many companies now offering drop shipped goods to eBay traders, it is easier than ever to find great quality goods at bargain prices, and earn a good mark up off selling other people’s products.
EBay may be simple however, but there are still a few things you will need to learn. First, and most important is that eBay does not ship goods themselves. You, as the seller, will need to arrange shipping of items to your clients around the world. Make sure that you have a good idea of what that will cost, or you could lose a lot of money fast.
Also, bear in mind that because eBay has a vested interest in retaining the popularity of their platform, they tend to take customer complaints very seriously, and if you want to expand your existing business by trading on eBay, or start a new business based on the platform, that your products and service should be high quality and beyond reproach.
Even with these suggestions in mind, however, eBay offers people who want to get involved in online business a quick, easy and hassle free way to start selling online, and allows you to trade on the name of a globally recognised company. It does not get better than that in the world of online trading!
