There are many people under the misconception that the only truly successful businesses are those that are huge and employ hundreds, even thousands of people. Sure, there are plenty of businesses that do this, as well as branching out into other businesses, and that is fine for some. But just because a business doesn't employ thousands of people all over the world, doesn't mean that it can't be just as successful. They are just successful on a smaller scale. It is more important to have a company that has big profits, and is not just big. How can you ensure that your business is going to achieve this? Why get bigger if you don't really have to? There are a lot of advantages to operating a small business rather than a larger one. For one thing, it can actually be a whole lot easier. You can operate with a much more relaxed attitude, and actually be able to enjoy your business, rather than have it just cause you nothing but stress. The bigger your business gets, the more problems you could have, which can cost a lot of money in the long run. If your business remains small, you will have much more opportunities to get the profits you want. Profits Should Be Your Main Focus Instead of putting all of your focus on making your business bigger, which is going to involve many expenses, your main focus should be on making money. Profits are always the bottom line, and the smaller you are, the fewer expenses you will have eating into your profits. If you want to grow your business, and it is something that you can afford to do, then go ahead. But if it is not going to be profitable, you should probably think twice about it. You May Even Want To Downsize Not only is it not always a good idea to expand your business, there may be times when it is actually much more profitable to downsize. You are probably always going to be looking for ways to cut costs, and downsizing can really help. Keep staff to a minimum, and even use freelancers whenever possible to save even more money. Technology is a great thing, and it is making it so that businesses really can succeed, even if they are simply bare bones operations. Of course you will probably still have to have some employees. There is no such thing as a computer that can completely emulate a human being, not yet anyway. But, there are a lot of things that computers can do today that were once done by people, eliminating the need for having large staff numbers. Use technology whenever you can to cut costs and increase your profits. If You Do Decide to Grow, Do It Wisely There is nothing saying that you can't grow your business if this is what you really want to do. But, if you are going to take the risk, you at least have to be smart in the way that you go about it. Don't take any risks that you don't have to, and maintain control of every aspect of your business. A great way to start is by turning each of your departments into separate businesses, each operating as its own entity. Do your research, and if growing your business is your goal, make the right decisions that will help you achieve that goal, while maintaining your profits.
