Branding is something that every business owner, large and small should be more aware of everyday. While you may be thinking, “but I just own a small business, I don’t have a branding plan”, you should still have one to stay afloat.
Having a branding plan is when you have come up with a successful marketing method to your target client base demographic. This can happen through the TV or radio ads, flyers and other paper publications, social media as well as word of mouth.
You can have the most fabulous chocolate cake in the state, but if no one really knows about your company just miles away then your work is far from over. Referrals from those that adore your product line and your services can only get you so far in a business growth. There will be times during the year when the business gets slow and you will really need a boost of fresh new clients to help you get through the month.
Brand mission can be fun and it really shows you what your company is all about. What type of products are you marketing and what it your key demographic that you are selling them to? It is absolutely imperative to become familiar with your key demographic, also referred to as target market, before you start off with your brand mission. You can perform a simple brand market analysis to achieve this crucial information.
Gather all of the data that you will need to create a successful branding debut.
Branding can come in the form of a logo, tagline, great one of a kind service that only you can provide your customers with, it really is all about what you are comfortable with.
How you go about achieving the next steps in your branding plan will most likely depend on how much you can afford financially to make those dreams come true. Having a budget before you start playing around branding is crucial for your business success. Remember, there are low cost and high cost options and the choice will really depend on where you currently are with your business and how fast you want to move forward.
If you are a starting business owner with a tight budget, you will want to start on the web and do as much as you can for free to begin with. Look at how other companies have been successful with their own unique style of branding. Check them out and aim to do the same for yours (I mean creating your unique style, not copying exactly what they’re doing – lol).
Give out something free if your company can afford it. Studies have shown that people trust businesses that award something free more than the ones that don’t give away anything to their clients. This can be something as tiny as a company pen with your logo on it, free resource or report, even free trial.
It takes very little for your business to succeed once you are aware of what you are selling, who you are selling it to and how important that relationship will be in the years to come.

Oh, What a Year It Was!
Oh, What a Year It Was! I recently shared with our Best Life Design Community, an exercise by Dan Pearce of Single Dad Laughing (http://bit.ly/fGL6t0) shaking up the New Year’s resolutions process. Instead of listing everything he wanted to happen in the New Year, Dan created a future memory at the beginning of the year about how the year progressed. We encouraged our Community to write their own 2011 in review, so it’s only right that I get the ball rolling and share mine. Here it goes…

Excerpt From Street Hockey Millionaire
“You know what they say,” Pete said. “You’ve got to play the full 60 minutes if you want to win.” Steve began, “Let’s get started. Did everyone write some game plans for their highest priority goals?” Pete replied, “ We haven’t had time yet, Steve, but we’re going to do it this week.” Steve ...

Too busy to look after your finances?
So here he was, stuck in the office instead of watching his son play hockey. Meanwhile, Steve was out playing street hockey for three hours a day with his kids. What weighed more on Pete’s brain was that street hockey used to be the love of his life now, it was just a nuisance. Although he’d ...

Numbing Away Our Humanity?
I came across a video this week that features a new technology that captures people’s attention in a novel way. It’s worth watching simply to take a look and ask how you might use it in your business. But its value far surpasses this. In this video, Sir Ken Robinson, makes a powerful call for a paradigm shift in education. This struck me at a deep level, given my raising of 3 kids (including one we home schooled for a couple of years to provide him more of what he needed at the time) and my work on behalf of lower opportunity kids in the non-profit sector.
