Many would be small business owners and entrepreneurs believe that if they have a good idea, and they put a lot of thought and planning into it, they are virtually guaranteed that their venture will be a runaway success.

However, while it is true that planning, logic and reason have a lot to do with business success, there is also the element of passion that you need to bear in mind.

The thing that many small business owners do not realise, when they are starting out, is that launching a business is hard work! Very often, you will be required to put in long hours, on your own, with very little financial reward. You will face frustrations almost daily, and there is a good chance you will experience a fair amount of rejection while you are starting out, and before your company becomes a household name.

If your business idea and plan is built on logic and reason alone, you are likely to become despondent quickly, and consider giving up and going back to your day job. However, if you are passionate about your business, and you know deep down inside that it will work, eventually, then you are far more likely to stick around during the tough times that almost always accompany a business start up, and weather the storm.

Passion is the thing that will get you out of bed in the morning, when you would rather be sleeping late, and it is the driving force that will keep you at your desk late at night. It is the thing that will drive you to seek new markets, and to build relationships with new customers.

It is also the thing that will help you to stick to your business idea, and your dreams, when everyone else is saying that they are impossible to achieve – and when you start to hear a little voice in your head that seems to agree.

It has been said that if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. If you are considering going into business for yourself, to escape a job that you do not like, then doesn’t it make more sense to find something that you are truly passionate about, instead of going from one unpleasant situation to another? That’s why it’s important to make decisions about what type of business you will own and run based on logic and reason, and on your own passions.

Some people are capable of being passionate simply about making money, and lots of it, but for most of us, once the novelty wears off, we start looking for something more. Something fulfilling. That’s the difference between owning and running a business that you’re passionate about, and one that you’re simply doing to make ends meet.

Finding your passion, and understanding what drives you, and what you love, is one of the most important things you can do before you start a business, to ensure your long-term success. It’s the reason that many people turn their hobbies into successful home businesses – it’s something they already love to do, and they’re passionate enough about it to want to spend all their time doing it. That automatically leads to greater success, because you’re willing to devote the time and energy necessary to build your company.

A good idea would be to sit down before you even decide which business you want to open, and consider the things you love. It could be anything from working with children to cooking, to creating murals, or anything else you love to do. If it gets you excited, and it’s something you’re passionate about, then it’s worth being on your list.

Then look at your list. Some of your passions are destined to stay hobbies or interests, but there’s probably at least one or two things that you’re really interested in, or really love, that you could turn into a profitable business. Those are the things you should focus on pursuing.

Of course, these days its easier than ever to start a business that’s based on your passions. You could write an e-book, for instance, or create an e-course. You could run a web store that sells your crafts, or sell them on a platform like Etsy, or you could simply create a niche information website about something you’re passionate about, and use it to earn advertising revenues. Whatever you do, however, if you do it with passion, you’re far more likely to succeed!

If you already own a business, but you’ve found that far from being passionate, you dread working on your business, then there are still ways you can inject your business with a little more passion. Consider the aspects of your business that you like, and those you don’t. Is there any way that you can focus more on the products or services that excite you, and less on those that don’t? Is there a new direction that you can take your business in, which will make you more excited and passionate about it? Even something as simple as delegating the tasks you hate, so you can focus on the ones you love can help to restore your passion about your business.

Being an entrepreneur and a business owner is supposed to be exciting. Yes, there’s the aspect of financial reward, but ideally, you should get a lot more from your business than just money. So start thinking about your passions, and how you can turn them into a business. With any luck, you could be one of those people who never works a day in their life, because they are following their dream!
