The image of weaving straw into gold comes to mind when I think of how we can successfully turn dreams into reality. This alchemy is experienced when we take moments of raw inspiration (straw) from the metaphysical ethers and turn them into ideas and action. The result is our own unique creation. However, we are not guaranteed to strike gold every time. Sometimes we tap into a rich vein with ease and synchronicity. And other times we labor endlessly with dogged determination. What creates success for some and not others? The secret to increasing your chances for success lies in the quality of the energy you embody as you focus on accomplishing your goals and daily tasks. This alone can determine the outcome of your ideas and inspiration. A Time When Things Fell Into Place Maybe I can best explain this by giving you an example from my own life. About 20 years ago I was living in Missouri and had a dream of moving to Montana. In my gut I knew I had to do it. With no actual plan as to where I might work or live I packed my car and “headed west”. The events that unfolded upon my arrival to Bozeman were synchronistic. I easily secured an apartment during a time when there were severe rental shortages and a nearly zero percent vacancy rate. After my big find I decided to go and spend a relaxing week hiking and camping in the mountains in Grand Teton National Park. Upon return it was time to get serious and find a job. I remember opening the classified section of the newspaper where I found a listing for a position similar to a job I had held in the Midwest. I interviewed for it that very day and was hired on the spot. Opportunities seemed to flow easily during this time in my life. My energy was open and trusting. I was able to relax and enjoy my surroundings while experiencing the unfolding process of settling into a new community. However, there have also been plenty of times when I wasn’t immersed in the presence of this flowing and trusting energy - times when I have felt fearful and tense. During these times it was almost always an arduous and difficult process to achieve my goals. Recall a Past Experience Take a moment and think about a time in your life when you created something with ease. How did things unfold and fall into place for you? What did the process feel like and what was the end result? Now, think of another time in your life when you attempted to create something and found the process to be hard and forceful. How did the process feel? What were the results? Likely the times when things fell into place easily were times when you were willing to be trusting and receptive and release any thoughts, doubts or disbeliefs about your inability to achieve your vision. Notice Your Energy & Take Action Next time you find yourself involved in a creative process –whether it be something as simple making a decision while running daily errands or achieving a personal goal, pursuing a new career path or if you run your own business - thinking of inspired ways to attract new clients, take a moment and check in with yourself and notice the quality of your energy. Is it tense, driven, controlling and fearful? If so, ask yourself “if I weren’t afraid of failing, what’s the first step I would take to move me one step closer to achieving my goal?” Listen to the first response that comes to your mind. Be willing to get into immediate action. You will discover that by taking inspired action while simultaneously being willing to release your fears and doubts that you will be able to move forward with greater alignment and ease and take the first bold steps towards magically transforming that straw in your life… into gold.

I've come to realize that the situations that challenge me the most as a leader and business owner are the ones that bring up a lot of emotions for me. Immediately my internal dialogue kicks in. In the moment it seems like my internal dialogue is simply reporting the truth about my situation or the person I'm upset with. And before I'm aware of it I get caught up in my inner commentary and self-made internal reality and forget that it's simply an internal conversation that I've created about my situation.

As I travel through my life, I have often noticed that dogs have some interesting effects on people. In the presence of a dog, even the gruffest, most hardened human beings can become soft and caring. I also notice that in the past few decades, more and more people are adopting dogs than ever before. In fact, I believe it safe to say that human beings harbour much more generalized affection for the entire canine species than they do for the human race. As a lifelong dog lover, my observations caused me to ask myself some very important questions about our puppy friends...
