So you’ve decided to go online for help and you are looking at community forums. But which one do you choose?
Are you looking for technical support regarding a product or service? Are you looking to get advice on a personal level such as health or fitness? Maybe you are thinking of starting a business and need some guidance.
No matter what topic you need assistance with, there is bound to be a forum which will address your needs. With the rising popularity of peer-to-peer support groups, you may discover that finding a forum is not the problem, but rather which of the numerous communities is best for you.
Before registering for any forum, view a number of messages in that community to see if it is the right place for you. Most forums will allow you to navigate around the various topics to check out the type of questions being posted, the time it takes for a response and the number of solutions provided. You don’t want to post your issue to a community that is slow in responding and have to wait days to get your answer.
You may also pick up on the ‘atmosphere’ of the community. Some forums are very user friendly while a few may tend to be less welcoming to newcomers. Be sure you will be comfortable posting there. In the more sophisticated forums, the members are there to help and will respond in a respectful manor. Plus, the Moderators will enforce the guidelines regarding courtesy between members. The last thing you want to do is wind up in a forum where you post a message and receive a ‘snarky’ response because you are a ‘newbie.’ Those types of forum should be avoided, because it indicates that no one is watching the store and the established members have taken control.
A good forum directory will guide you to a community which will answer your needs in a reasonable time frame and is respectful of all members. After all, these user-to-user support platforms are referred to as community forums and are made up of people just like you.
So even if your intention is to just to get your question answered and never participate again, you may as well find a site that is friendly. You never know what can happen; you might find that other members display a sincere willingness to help and make you feel so much at home that you decide to participate on a regular basis and share your knowledge.
It happened to me that way!
