Every business goes through its slow periods, and when they do, it is important that business owners take steps to improve on their marketing. Even during times of a tough economy, people will still spend money if they need something and are getting value for their money. But, you may have to work a little bit harder to get these customers to do business with you. This is the time to get creative, and a bit more forceful with your marketing strategy. This is the time to get into guerrilla marketing, and here are five ways you can get started: Go back to old fashioned methods: Long before the introduction of actual money, people were bartering goods to get the things they wanted and needed. You can actually still find ways to put this practice into use today. One thing that immediately comes to mind is to try and get other businesses to go in on mutual promotions. For instance, if you are selling building tools, you may want to partner up with a company that sells lumber. This way, you can spend less on marketing while still getting all of the benefits, and your customers will receive even more benefits. Get out there and try to sell more: If you have already paid your dues, you will probably not be overly thrilled about having to go back to sales, even for a little while. It may take a lot of work, but during the slack times, this is something that you may have to end up doing. Just roll up your shirt sleeves and get out there and market your butt off. As long as you are still able to maintain profits, that is all that really matters, right? Make technology your new best friend: When sales are slow, you have to find ways to cut back on expenses so your business can still maintain a profit. You can cut a lot of costs when you utilize the latest in technology. There are many time saving tools you can use that are going to help you save money. By going paperless, you no longer have to pay for paper, nor will you be wasting time searching for files. You can do your banking online, which will save you time from having to stand in line at the banks. Whatever technology you can use to save you time and money, don't hesitate to take advantage of it. Offer what your competitors are not: If you are going to keep on getting sales, even during tough economic times, you need to go above and beyond what your competitors are doing. Let's say your business and another business nearby are both selling ovens. You can up the ante by offering things like extended warranties, great discounts, and other incentives that will make people want to deal with you rather than your competitors. Basically, you need to have a Unique Selling Proposition (USP) that will help see you through the good times as well as the bad. Keep an eye on your cash flow: One of the biggest problems that many business owners encounter is a lack of cash when they need it. It is important to make sure that there is always a cash flow, and that you keep it in check so that you always have it when you need it. If you are currently offering credit, you may have to stop, because credit is not going to help your cash flow any. Get payments up front, or at least partial payments. Just do whatever it takes to improve your cash flow without having to ask for credit. This is going to help you get through the rough times, and when things are going better, you can increase your cash flow for the next time things start to slow down.
