The mindset you have while training Jiu-Jitsu is crucial to success in the sport. I personally think that you should train to develop the game that works to your strengths. I believe a complete understanding of basics is very essential to success in your training. Once you understand the basics and begin to develop your Jiu-Jitsu game I think you should concentrate on one technique in particular. By concentrating on one technique for a month or so you will develop that part more completely. We have all heard the saying don’t fear the man that did 10,000 different kicks fear the man that did one kick 10,000 times. I think you should spend hours and hours, even a whole month simply drilling that particular technique. If you are the best in the world at one technique, then you do not need 50 different techniques to submit your opponent, just that one. Concentrating on one particular thing gives you the opportunity to master that position or submission. It doesn’t matter if it is Jiu-Jitsu or MMA, arm bar or double leg, the hours you put into each technique are what make your game plan strong and transform you into a tough competitor.
The next thing that I feel is important to advancing your training is to write everything down when you are done with class. If you just sit on the edge of the mat with a notebook and write everything down that you just learned. Writing the mistakes you had while grappling, the instruction from class, anything that you experienced on the mat that worked or did not. Not only can you refer back to the journal for questions you have, but writing it down helps you to remember the information and recall it easier in the future. You can more easily be conscience of problems and strengths in your Jiu-Jitsu or MMA game by doing this. There by improving at a faster pace then you previously anticipated.
