Many people talk about metabolism, however, truth is that most people are not even familiar with what metabolism is, what contributes to it and how you can make use of this information to stay lean.
The following are three general components of metabolism, and how you can make use of this knowledge to lose weight.
First of all, it is your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). This is the minimum amount of energy required to maintain vital bodily functions. Most people think that exercise is the most energetically costly thing in our daily lives, but it is actually our BMR which accounts for around majority of our daily energy. More calories are burned just to keep you alive than any other activity you do in the day.
The next question will be how to increase your metabolic rate? The easiest way is to build more muscle. Muscle is metabolically expensive to maintain. If you build more muscles, it will take more calories to prevent it from shrinking and this will contribute to your overall metabolism. Another thing you can do to increase your metabolic rate is to make sure you consume a nutrient-dense diet high in vegetables and proteins like wild caught fish.
Next, you need purposeful exercise, which is exercise meant to increase markers of performance, such as improving your aerobic conditioning or build muscle and strength through a specific exercise program. Exercise programs make up approximately 10-15% of your total daily caloric needs.
The best ways to exercise to increase your caloric expenditure are strength training and interval training. The level of intensity involved in such types of exercises will mean that you get a higher level of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, resulting in elevated metabolic rate even after your exercising. This could be many hours depending on the intensity of exercises you performed.
Lastly, the final component with respect to metabolism is Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT). NEAT is another contributor to your overall metabolism. This would include walking the stairs, going for leisurely walks or bike rides, mowing the lawn, and just being more active in general. How then, do you take full advantage of NEAT to increase your metabolism and burn more fats faster?
Examples would include taking the stairs instead of the lift, carrying groceries instead of using the cart, going for more leisurely bike rides, getting up and moving around the office regularly. These are just a few options; you should choose those most suitable for you!
