Although English is spoken by a vast amount of people worldwide, it is still not the number one spoken language in the world. So it is safe to say that for those of us who only speak English and find ourselves in a country where English is not the first language or in some cases not spoken at all, it is very difficult to find our way around. But do not despair, it is possible to learn a new language without even attending a single class. Believe me it can be done.
For someone like myself who did not know Portuguese before traveling to Brazil, initially, familiarizing myself with a few basic phrases on the ten hour flight to Brazil made it easier for me to order food and ask for simple directions. But that was is Sao Paulo where some English is spoken, but that was not the end of my travels. There was another challenge up ahead. I still had to travel to Salvador, Bahia, where little or no English was spoken and my friend’s family did not know English at all. So in one weekend I had to learn Portuguese or else no one would have been able to communicate. When I returned to the States I decided to learn Portuguese. My company paid for language courses, but I did not have the time to dedicate to a class, but seeing that I had a strong desire to learn Portuguese, I devised another approach. There is no time limit for you to learn. You can learn at your own pace.
