There are few things in life worth more than happiness and inner peace. People seek after many things. Material objects, fame, and fortune are often among these. What is the goal of getting things? Typically, people will say it's happiness. They think they have to have x, y, and z complete in the exte
al world before they can relax and really be happy. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, the exte
al world is relatively unimportant in terms of happiness. What is important is your internal world. As you can see, this mindset causes a lot of problems, because the truth is that happiness comes from the inside.

Happiness is a function of your peace of mind at any particular moment. For example, if you're going about your day and it's full of stress and worries, chances are you won't be very happy. On the other hand, if you're feeling really relaxed, something as simple as a pleasant scent can be extremely pleasurable. The key to happiness is to find out how to reach that state of silent inner peace. My favorite method for doing this is meditation.

It's possible to meditate for a lot of different things. A lot of people will use it for intention manifestation and visualization, and that works great, but I believe meditation's primary function is to bring a stillness to the mind. This is the gateway to bliss.

Meditating with the goal of quieting your mind is actually fairly simple, at least in theory, but it can be extremely hard to do if you don't use the right techniques. One of the keys to proper meditation is becoming the watcher of your thoughts. This means that you are no longer identified with what your brain is doing. You essentially step outside of your thought stream. Remember not to analyze or judge anything that comes up during meditation, as this will cause your thoughts to cycle again, causing anxiety in the process. Simply observe what your mind is doing. Remember that you aren't really your mind. You're something much greater.

Another technique I like to use is proper breathing. I monitor my breathing by becoming consciously aware of each breath. Try to fill your entire being with each cycle of air so much that you can't focus on anything else. Ensure that each breath is smooth and easy. You'll find that when you are aware of your breathing, you'll tend to spend much longer than usual on the intake and exhalation. This is normal, and is actually much healthier than our usual short, irregular style of breathing.

By ensuring you're breathing properly and watching your thoughts without interference, you'll eventually reach a place of peace and joy. This is inevitable when you clear your mind, and is called your natural state of being. It's akin to how a child feels, without a care in the world. You can return to this state whenever you want by meditating in this manner, and each time you do it you'll get a little better. Eventually, you can enjoy this state of silence in the mind permanently through meditation. This is also known as enlightenment.

I was watching my six and nine year old daughters playing the other morning when suddenly there was a barrage of I Hate You and I Don't Like You Anymore statements flying about the room. Of course, it was just a moment of disagreement in child play, but the thoughts and feelings were real enough to them at that moment.
