How to "TELL" Your Blood Pressure to go Down

One of the most powerful ways to control your blood pressure is by simply “telling” it to go down. Before we go into how you can “tell” your blood pressure to go down, let’s take a look at the mind-body connection.
Take a moment right now and pay attention to how you feel. Are you calm, relaxed, or maybe a little stressed? Whatever you’re feeling, it’s a chemical in your blood.
Emotions are fundamentally nothing more than a soup of chemicals called neurotransmitters. The great news is that there are powerful drug-free ways to help control those neurotransmitters and shape the way you feel.
One technique is to eliminate negative thoughts that don’t serve you. We all do it, a negative thought will enter our minds and it just tumbles around like a towel in the dryer. The first trick is to catch yourself in the act and ask yourself this question, “Does this thought serve me?”
The fact is that not all negative thoughts are bad. You need to take a moment and distinguish the thought between one that is trying to help us and needs to be acted on, and one that serves no real purpose other than pulling us down.
As an example, if the thought is, “My job makes me miserable,” and you really are unhappy in your job, that’s an example of a thought that’s trying to serve you. Therein lies the danger in taking drugs, prescription or otherwise, for stress and anxiety. The problem is that the drugs suppress all anxieties – even the ones that we need as the gentle nudges to help guide us away from the cause of our unhappiness in the first place.
Then there are the thoughts that serve no real purpose other than bringing us down. Dr. Daniel Amen, author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, calls them “ANTs,” Automatic Negative Thoughts. His suggestion? Squash the ANT’s – remove them from your life.
The best ways for ANT control are through diet, exercise, deep relaxation techniques like Guided Breathing and through the words we use.
Let’s compare these two phrases:
“Let’s see if we can’t figure this out.”
“Let’s see how we’re going to figure this out.”
The first phrase subconsciously assumes that there might be no solution.
The second phrase assumes that there must be an answer.
Which phrase has a better chance of finding a solution? The second one - of course! One of the easiest ways to lower your blood pressure is by changing your phrasing to assume a positive outcome. When you tell your mind that there must be an answer, chances are you’re going to find it.
Another extension of this is to avoid needless negative phrases. This doesn't mean that you can’t call a spade a spade when a spade needs to be called a spade. It simply means if we can avoid saying negative things that aren’t going to serve any purpose, we should.
Part of high blood pressure is stress. Part of stress is our emotions. Part of our emotions is how we choose to handle them and the words we choose to use. One powerful technique for lowering your blood pressure without drugs is to choose to use positive phrases and make sure our thoughts serve us.
