How YOU CAN HANDLE DISTRACTIONS that Get in the Way

Right now, I’m sitting at my desk trying to write this blog. As use the word “trying” as Cali (my wonderful 4-legged child) is making that crying noise and distracting me from getting into my creative mode. What do I do? Telling her to stop crying will definitely not work. I can push through and ignore it or go over and play with her. Guess which wins?

Honestly, at first, I was kind of annoyed. After all, this was my time to write, and Cali was interrupting me. Doesn’t she know that she’s supposed to let me write? No, of course not, she’s a dog. So, I went over and gave her attention and love. She then got quiet and went off to play.

How often do you start to do something and then something or someone else gets in the way?

It’s especially worse when you have blocked off the time and are under deadline. When I was in Corporate, I used to push through all of this. Often, making myself miserable and even though the work would get completed, it was a struggle the entire way.

What I’m suggesting to you is that when this happens in the future and you get that distraction is to make a choice how to handle it.

Here are two steps that are critical for you to take:

1. Take a few deep breaths or a nice big yawn. This action will help you take space away from the situation and your thoughts.

2. Ask yourself how you want to approach this distraction. Do you want to ignore it, pay attention to it, move away from it? What do you choose? Sometimes the distraction is temporary and will go away quickly and sometimes it doesn’t.

By taking those two steps, you’ll be proactive instead of reactive. By reactive, I’ve seen people (and worked with these type of people) who have yelled, screamed or thrown things when they’ve had distractions. Basically, it’s the feeling of being “powerless” and out of control which makes them act that way.
When you’re able to take that step away and make your best decision, you’ll be happier with your outcome and even more importantly, with the journey to get there.

By the way, when all is said and done, I wrote this content for you and I’m very pleased with it. Enjoy and let me know how it works for you.
