Most people can accept the physical and mental aspects of wellness, but it's important not to neglect our spiritual side. Some make good arguments that it is the most important. Health and wellness are incomplete without recognition and maintenance of spirit.
The Bible says that our bodies are, "temples for our spirit." Although it can't be measured in any way, most doctors recognize the spirit as an important component of wellness. Research has shown that those who consider themselves spiritual heal faster, have longer-lasting relationships, and even have stronger immunity, giving them healthier bodies.
Archeologists see evidence that the spirit has been important to mankind since our origins. The great mystery of what it exactly is, how to find it, and what it does, has filled volumes. But most agree that being spiritual means establishing and maintaining a closer relationship with God.
How does one become more spiritual? First of all, by accepting and observing the differences between spiritless creatures and ourselves. An obvious difference is that the spirit provides hope for the future, especially in the afterlife. Next, explore what great scholars have written over the eons. Then get in tune with yourself, spending time alone and being quiet.
A popular spiritual leader was once asked what he wished he had done differently as he looked back over his illustrious career. His surprising answer was, "to spend more time just sitting alone and paying attention." Mother Theresa said, "Before you speak it is necessary for you to listen, for God speaks in the silence of the heart." Another spiritual scholar illustrated that finding and growing one's spirit involves shedding barriers like selfishness and distrust. The famous theologia
Martin Luther, and other Christian leaders teach that a holy spirit is gained as a gift from God through faith. Many have been martyred for this belief.
Our spirit connects us to our higher purpose or mission in life. Without that connection, you face a very stressful existence. Deepak Chopra says, "Each of us is here to discover our true Self," that, "We are spiritual beings who have taken manifestation in physical form, that we're not human beings that have occasional spiritual experiences."
Get to know someone who is in touch with their Creator, and you'll usually notice desirable traits like tranquility, confidence, fearlessness, humility, love, virtue, and generosity.
Spiritual growth is a vital component of wellness and is an exciting and life-changing pursuit. It can be contagious.
