Illuminate Your Inner Goddess with the Winter Solstice & the Full Moon

The 21st of December will mark the longest night of the year.

Known as the Winter Solstice, in ancient cultures this was one of the most important days of the year.

Indeed, over 5000 years ago many temples and sacred sites were constructed around this day…or the moment of sunrise following the long, dark night.

I have just returned from Malta, a tiny island in the Mediterranean that is dotted with sacred temples dedicated to the Goddess. On the Winter Solstice, in one such temple at Mnajdra for example a very distinctive ’slit-image’ is projected by the sun’s rays on to a large stone slab, estimated to weigh 2.5 tonnes within the temple.

Newgrange in Ireland too is home to a very impressive site. Above the entrance to the passage at Newgrange there is a opening called a roof-box. Its purpose is to allow sunlight to penetrate the chamber on the shortest days of the year, around December 21, the winter solstice.

At dawn, from December 19th to 23rd, a narrow beam of light penetrates the roof-box and reaches the floor of the chamber, gradually extending to the rear of the chamber. As the sun rises higher, the beam widens within the chamber so that the whole room becomes dramatically illuminated. This event lasts for 17 minutes, beginning around 9am.

These ancient architectural masterpieces were constructed with incredible precision by people who had an understanding of the mighty significance of these moments.

Night time has long been associated with the feminine energy, dreams, inner wisdom, insights, fertility, sexuality and reflection. The longest night of the year then is, perhaps, the most powerful night for women…..for the feminine energy….

This year, the Winter Solstice coincides with the last Full Moon of the Year. The moon too has long represented the feminine. So the 21st of December this year will allow an especially powerful expression of the Divine Feminine Energy.
