The new year brings a chance to change something about our life. Why don’t we make sure that change is for the better? As the turn of the new year happens, it is just about time for us to rethink a lot of things about our lives. One of them are household expenses.
We’ve all grown accustomed to certain purchases in our household that it becomes stationary in our lives. We got so used to some of them that we even reach for them even first thing in the morning. However, not everything is practical anymore. There are certain expenses that we need to analyze if it is still beneficial for everyone living with you. This is most helpful if we are in the position of having limited funds due to debt payments.
To start with, you should look into what you serve for breakfast. Did you know that in the last 5 years, the prices of breakfast food, especially waffles and pancakes increased by 20%? If you eat this every day, or at least most days of the week, then you have been spending more on food. Cereals, on the other hand, have maintained a steady price over the years and they provide the same breakfast satisfaction. So before you make a purchase in the grocery, compute just how much you are consuming each week. If you do not want to serve your family cereals everyday, why not try baking your own bread? It is definitely cheaper than its alte
atives. Compare different breakfast variations to see which is more economical - without sacrificing the nutrition that your family requires.
Another thing that we have grown used to at home are bottled waters. The average American household spends more than $300 on water bottled water. If you install a water filter at home, you can use that amount for something else in your home. Or better yet, you can put that in your savings account. Instead of buying cases of bottled water, you only have to change filters - that is roughly 4 times a year.
Beauty products also dig deep into the budget of the average American household. Since you do not buy make up in bulk, you do not realize that you are spending a lot for it. But if you line up all the beauty products that you own, you may be surprised at the amount that you have spent on them.
There is one more expense that is actually ending up as a waste - coupons. It goes against the principle but it is true. Imagine buying a discounted coupon for a spa service. Even if you have no time for it at the moment, you go ahead with the purchase since it is at a discount anyway. Weeks after, you unearth it from your drawer only to find out that it is already expired. This scenario is quite common. While coupons are not really bad, you need to purchase them only for things that you really need.
With all the household expenses that we make every month, tracking every penny can be very tedious. But if you have a limited budget, this is something that you have to go through to maximize your extra money for more important expenses.
