I am sure you know that to be fit and healthy, you need to eat healthy foods. However, even the healthiest foods will not be able to be properly processed by a poorly functioning intestinal tract. This can lead to chronic health problems. In fact, more than 60 millio
Americans suffer from digestive disorders including heartburn, indigestion, diarrhoea, and constipation. Poor digestion can cause fatigue and depression; which can lead to weight gain.
Making simple changes in the way you eat can make a huge improvement in your digestion and thus improve the effectiveness of your weight loss regime. Below are five simple steps you can take to improve your digestion.
First of all, you should eat less. One of the most common reasons for poor digestion is overeating. A simple solution is to reduce your portion sizes. If you overfill your stomach, it will not be able to properly mix its contents and digest them. Do not stuff yourself; eat until you are only approximately two-thirds full. Also, break up your meals into six small meals a day to keep your metabolism rate high.
Next, you should eat unprocessed unrefined whole fresh foods. With all the highly processed fast foods consumed, it is no wonder people suffer from digestive problems. One of the best things you should do to ensure proper gut health is to take a diet rich in whole foods providing adequate nutrients and fiber. Examples are fruits, vegetables, nuts seeds, organic eggs and fish!
You should drink plenty of water. Always make sure to stay hydrated and water is especially important for digestion. One of the major functions of water is to bulk up your stool and keeps it moving so that you will not be constipated. Additionally, water is an important detoxification element by naturally flushing toxins from your body including your digestive system. Drink water regularly throughout the day to avoid dehydration as this can negatively affect your digestive system. If you normally do not drink much water, make a conscious effort to do so now.
Finally, you should be more active. The benefits of regular exercise are aplenty, yet most people do not get enough exercise. Lack of exercise will usually contribute to weight gain. Exercise also supports proper digestion by stimulating the normal contractions of the intestines and reducing constipation. Also, regular exercise will help you build lean muscle and lose excess fats. Thus it is important to remain active each day.
