-Kids can be naïve; hence, the parents should involves themselves with their online activities to ensure their safety online. It is recommended to make them aware about the hazards that can take place if they disclose their personal information including their name, email address, contact details, residential address and security number to strangers.
-Parents should always give their kids a certain level of restriction when it comes to chatting or surfing on a social networking site. Ask your kids as well to create gender-neutral usernames for added safety.
-Because photos have gone digital nowadays, it is natural that kids share their pictures with other friends. Advise your kids however to let you see the pictures first before they post them on social networking sites for everyone to see. Teach them how to activate their privacy settings and inform them about the consequences of sharing their passwords with others.
-Tell your kids that not talking to strangers also applies online. It is important to make your kids understand that interacting with an unknown individual can bring him or her harm.
-Parents should discipline their children when it comes to internet usage. For instance, give a certain amount of time when your kids can use the internet for leisure. Limit the use of the internet for projects and research papers to ensure their safety.
-Make your children aware about the repercussions when it comes to internet scams and phishing emails. As parents, point out to your children the differences between genuine and fraudulent emails.
-Kids as well as teens can also fall prey into the hands of fraudsters. It is good to tell your children that downloading unknown email attachments can become gateways for viruses and corrupt their computers. Apart from making them aware about the ill-effects of viruses, it is also wise to teach them how to regularly update their anti-virus and computers.
-The younger generation should be made aware of the consequences of downloading software from unknown sources. There are a lot of hackers and identity thefts that create software with the sole purpose of luring teens into downloading them.
