IRON
IRON is a trace element which is needed by the Body for the formation of Blood. The Human Body normally contains 3-4 g of Iron, more than half of which in the form of Hemoglobin, the red pigment in Blood, Hemoglobin transports Oxygen from the Lungs to the Tissues. Iron is a constituent of a number of Enzymes. The Body’s Iron balance varies mainly according to Dietary intake as looses Iron during menstruation.
In Humans Iron is involved in Oxygen transport. It is also essential for the regulation of Cells growth and differentiation. A deficiency of Iron limits Oxygen delivery to cells, resulting in fatigue, poor work performance, and decreased Immunity. On the other hand excess amount of Iron can result in toxicity.
The absorption of Iron from plant foods is improved by the presence in a meal of vitami
C, (Ascorbic acid), other organic acids such as Malic Acid (In pumpkins,plums and apples) and Citric Acid(In citrus fruits).
Symptoms of Iron deficiency Anaemia include Tiredness and Breathlessness especially on physical exection, giddiness, palpitations,headache and poor concentration.
Iron Acids in immune function, temperature regulation,energy metabolism and work performance. About 90% of the Iron in our Body is conserved and reused everyday, the rest is excreted. Iron status is checked by Blood Test.
Suggestions to increase the amount of IRON in the Diet absorption. nn· Eat more brightly coloured fruits and vegetables which contain more Vitamin C. Vitamin C increases Iron absorption. nn· Choose Iron fortified breakfast cereals and breads. nnn· Cut back on the amount of Tea and Coffee, especially around mealtimes. Since the tannins in Tea and Coffee bind to the Iron and interfere with absorption. nn· Should take Iron supplements unless advised by the Doctor.
