Last night I was watching David Neagle speak on the topic “Are you Marketable?” Just so that you know David is someone who knows what he's talking about, not only is he a multi-millionaire, he has also mentored hundreds of entrepreneurs to become millionaires, and one of the things he says a lot is “tell me what you want – anything – and I'll show you how to get it”
So why am I talking about David Neagle? Well, it's because one of his top pieces of advice is that you have to master yourself before you can master the art of sales and marketing, something I totally agree with and have been teaching for a long time.
So what does mastering yourself mean?
Basically, it means mindset, having the right mindset for attracting in your ideal clients and the money that comes with them. It means having the right mindset for entrepreneurship – and that means having a success mindset.
Before we can go and speak to clients about our services and products we have to be absolutely sure that we believe in them and ourselves. That means we must know at our core that we can deliver the goods and that we are good enough - because if you don't believe in what you do, then no one else is going to. Self belief in business is crucial to your success and your marketing mastery.
And so if you are in conversations with people and you are not feeling really good about who you are and what you do, that will filter through to your prospective clients. The absolute basic here is for you to value you and who you are, and then secondly what you offer and the results you can help people achieve.
If you don't know that you can help someone make the transformation they are looking for, how on earth will they know? So it's about getting crystal clear on you, who you are, what you do and how you can help others.
As I am writing this I am mindreading you have heard all this before. And of course you have, and it's because it's true. Any successful entrepreneur, no strike that, any successful person at whatever they do, will tell you that their success is nearly all down to mindset.
If you don't have the confidence, the belief, the clarity around who you are and the results you can deliver to your clients, then you are leaving a lot of money on the table, it's as simple as that.
Let me make it clear through an example. So if you are a massage therapist and you are really clear that your passion lies in helping people with back pain, and you know you can do that through your services and products, plus you understand the value you offer, then you are 80% of the way to being successful. The remaining 20% will be in the strategies to achieve that.
However, if you are a massage therapist who isn't clear on who you want to help, and isn't really sure how to do it and whether or not you can really deliver the results and even what to charge, then it's going to be an uphill struggle to create a successful business.
Do you see the difference? Do you feel the difference in the energy behind the 2 examples? There is a massive difference in the doubt and insecurity of massage therapist number 2 and the confidence and clarity of number 1.
This is what I am talking about, being really clear with yourself first before speaking to prospective clients. And to help you get a taste of what that feels like, I encourage you to take 10 minutes to the following exercise.
1. Take out a piece of paper and pen and just start writing all the negative comments that are flying around in your head now, all those words and phrases and sentences that are telling you that you are less than you know you are. All the stuff that says you can't, why bother, who do you think you are, you'll never achieve that, why would someone pay for that, and so on. Purge yourself, put it all down on paper and keep going until there isn't another phrase left.
Then take the list and destroy it, rip it up and flush it down the toilet, burn it, bin it, bury it, whatever feels right to you, just get rid of it. This is a whole bunch of stories that have been passed on to you by other people, they are not your truth.
2. Now take a fresh piece of paper and write down the truth of who you really are at the core without all those stories that keep you small. And if you find more unhelpful phrases coming up, you haven't purged enough yet, so go back to step 1
Now you have your list of truths, place that somewhere you can see it everyday. It can be really helpful to break it down into bite-size pieces and post those pieces on post it notes or cards to carry around with you or stick to your fridge and your office wall.
You can find 10 minutes to do this - I know you can. We can all create 10 minutes if we want to. Go ahead, do it and see what happens. I guarantee you that you will feel a shift and you'll definitely become clearer on those stories that are holding you back. But more importantly, you are going to have a list of Truths. Truths that you can remind yourself of every minute of everyday - and that my friend is powerful, inspiring and empowering, just like you.
