IT’S ALL IN THE CONNECTION

I was coaching with a client yesterday, and I was reminded to share with her an insight I had been made aware of years ago. It struck a chord in her, it was one of those “Aha” moments and so I wanted to share it with you today.

And it’s this …. “people don’t remember you for the way you look, or the things you say, they remember you for the way you make them feel”.

This is not a wholly true statement because we can never make anyone feel anything. The feelings come from within, people ultimately choose how they feel. So what I am really saying is that it is about connecting with someone at the emotional level.

People like to feel good, people want to feel good, it’s what life is about. So you can spend hundreds of euros on a new outfit and a new hairstyle to impress, practise your best jokes to entertain, but at the end of the day, if you don’t connect with someone on the emotional level, you just won’t be remembered. We are all emotional beings.

So how is this relevant when it comes to your business? Well, people buy from people they know, like and trust.

So let’s break that down. Knowing you is the first part. If you are just meeting someone that means you are no longer a stranger, but if you don’t make that connection with someone on the emotional level you might as well be. And if you don’t leave them with a good impression of you, they certainly won’t remember you for any future work.

Like. This is another of those feelings! When you first meet someone they get to decide on whether they like you or not, and how do they work that one out? On the way they feel when they are around you, and that depends very much on your state of mind and how you feel about yourself. Once again it’s about the connection.

Trust. Oh no, it’s another feeling! How does someone decide whether or not they can trust you at a first meeting? Normally on the gut feeling they have about you, dare I say it again ….. do they feel that they can connect with you? And then as time goes on you can demonstrate your trustworthiness by being reliable and keeping your word. If you say you are going to do something, make sure you do to keep building the trust.

CONNECTION ….. is the word that comes up over and over again when we are talking about creating the know, like and trust factor and helping someone feel good.

Connection comes naturally when you are following your heart and working in a field you love. When you are passionate about what you do, you will nearly always be talking to people you would love to work with, and so it’s easy to connect.

Most people believe that connection comes from having things in common with people. That just isn’t true all the time. Connection, a real connection, comes from you feeling really good about yourself, being in a good quality state of mind, that’s the place to look at when you are ready to make that connection with people.

Your Assignment

1. Check on how you are feeling about yourself before you go out and have a conversation with a potential client.
2. If you are feeling good about you and about going out and having the conversation, great, go for it. If not, time to change that state or postpone the meeting.
3. Connect with your potential client, listen to what they want and need, and evaluate whether you can fill that need or desire.
4. Offer them the solution to their need or desire and ask if they want to invest.
