The season or merriment has rolled around again. Everywhere you turn your eyes will be flooded with messages to buy, consume, and give. And if you are one the millions of people out of work, searching for a job and just holding on to the basic necessities of life, the messages saturated with the buy, consume, and give mantras can run your idling spirit to an absolute stall. Several times in my life I have had to experience the stranglehold of joblessness. No doubt about it, being jobless is a miserable and depressing state of being. And the hurt is compounded when you cannot buy, consume or give. Suddenly you awake to the rush of the Yule Tide wondering how not to be noticed, wishing to be forgotten, invisible, and unreachable. During the season to be jolly, you wish you could be a prime time player. Fanciful visions of purchasing family and friends gifts past through your mind overwhelming your synaptic pathways. But they become too painful to bear in the face of joblessness. Facing this circumstance head on, you must fight the gravity of depression tugging at the tension cables of your heart and soul.
The best way to deal with job depression is to first recognize the signs of your depression. If you are feeling persistent sadness, guilt, worthlessness, helplessness, hopelessness, and fatigue, you are experiencing the lashes of the ogre called depression. Over 19 millio
Americans in general suffer from depression without the pressures of economic uncertainty and joblessness. However, currently, it is safe to assume that the near 15 million or more citizens with no job, and sentenced to an income less future (as a result of their benefits not being extended) nearly doubles the population affected by depression.
But there are cures for job depression. I want you to try a remedy I titled “AVATAR.” And no, I am not recommending you watch James Cameron’s “Avatar” (although it is a very spectacular and uplifting visual adventure). Your new job depression remedy, AVATAR, has helped me avoid slipping into a clinical depression due to my joblessness.
The hurt we feel during our joblessness is generated by our subconscious minds and thus this is where AVATAR is most effective. The first step is to accept your circumstance. This may include the process of reviewing the steps prior to you being laid off, fired, quitting or even arriving to your workplace to see chained doors. Take some responsibility for your circumstance. The second step is to visualize your future. Establish what you want to do in the future. Write out this picture of your future in terms of your future job, salary, things you want to purchase, investments you want to make, and vacation destinations you want to visit. Make it a habit to of visiting your vision morning, noon, and night daily for thirty days.
The third step of AVATAR is alignment. You must take the initiative of aligning your life with the life of those who live like you wish to live. Join organizations that share the same philosophy of living, creativity, charity, and innovation that support your future goals. Fight the urge to give up because you feel inadequate due to financial circumstances. Don’t punish yourself for not having by creating an emotional and psychological prison. Alignment is critical to uplifting your mind and spirit. The fourth step is time management. Take time to be your dream. Live a moment during the day as the painter, poet, entrepreneur, counselor, therapist, innovator, programmer and whatever you desire. Find a way to spend at least 1 hour being in your future. The fifth step is acting toward your goals. Each goal you set for yourself needs supportive objectives. The destination of your will, influence, and creativity is represented by your goals. The vehicle that gets you to those goals is your objectives. Your objectives are the action statements you live out every day to reach a goal.
Finally, the sixth step is record your progress. You should be your number one cheerleader whether you have a good support system or not. Establish a way to track your progress. Create a check list of your achievements. Establish for yourself milestones and write down when you have achieved that milestone. Use Microsoft Excel to create a table with your daily, weekly, and monthly goals. List the objectives for each goal unde
eath the goals. Check them off as you go along. For those who love to write, start a journal and attempt to make entries daily. You have the power of creating your new future by building up your AVATAR. During the process, your actions will choke off the fuel to depressive feelings and thoughts. Furthermore, you will have the job you have dreamed of attaining.
