Keeping up with web design trends and your competition

Often times as web designers, we naturally do what feels right, what works for our everyday workflow and what we’ve been doing for the past x amount of years. Is there an issue with that? Not really, but you may find that change is healthy, and change is good.
We all know how competitive the web design market is today. In fact, it seems that every other week there is a new web design company popping up from the soil. With competition comes strategy, and with strategy comes market trends. Market trends tell us what the “today’s” market likes and what is selling, whether that is a type and brand of product, or a service performed a certain way. A good example is the difference between taking a carpet stain out of your carpet. One company may tell you they use an enzyme to extract the spot, while the other company may tell you they don’t believe in the enzyme. So what do you do as the consumer? You hop online, see what MOST companies are doing, then you choose one that does the similar thing to the majority of companies.
Now in no way is web design like cleaning carpets, that was a mere example of how people think. To continue on about market trends, it is important for us never forget one golden rule as web designers, business owners, and entrepreneurs. Never stop learning and looking. The day you stop wanting to learn new techniques, the day you stop looking at your competition’s work because you simply don’t care, or the day you stop looking at your own site looking for ways that you can improve on, is simply the day you decide to throw your cards in.
In an ever-so changing scenery of web designers, the minute you exit the race, there’s another design firm ready to take your spot. Keep your designs and techniques as modern as modern is, and never stop wanting more out of your abilities. Many of us find that being comfortable is good enough, but being a long-lasting entrepreneur takes a notion that things will change, and you need to follow that change within. If you’re one of these business owners, it is never too late to change your methods and adjust gears to keep up with competition. Whether your customers know the difference or see the differences in the site improvements is only fractionally important compared to keeping your business image fresh, clean and competitive.

Create A Green Workplace -- At Home
For more than 20 years I have often been the only person of working age at home in our neighborhood from 9 to 5 on Monday through Friday. My daily commute to work: 25 feet – not 25 miles or 25 minutes. We entrepreneurs and telecommuters who work from home can tell you it takes ...

Green Business Starts At Home
My daily commute to work is 25-feet. No, I did not say 25-mile or 25-minute. I said 25-feet...and no car required, obviously. My morning fuel is usually a mug of green tea. Often I am the only adult of working age at home on our street during the day. Those of us who work from home can tell ...
