Keratoconus is a progressive eye disorder which is rare and often occurs between the age of 10 to 25 . In this , the eye’s cornea which is round , thins and bulges out into a cone shape. This leads to distorted vision as the cone shape deflects the light . It is a degenerative condition which may develop due to tears in the Dua layer which allows fluid buildup. It effects both eyes. It can be termed as a genetic disorder. Keratoconus is a non inflammatory condition which leads to thinning and steepening of the cornea. Keratoconus is actually thinning of cornea due to excessive oxidative stress from food like sugars, soda, refined carbs and junk food.
According to Ayurveda, Keratoconus is a condition related to timira , in particular vataja timira . Imbalance of Vatta dosha is the root cause of Keratoconus .
Symptoms of Keratoconus:
- Blurred and distorted vision with or without eyeglasses which makes it difficult to read or drive
- Sensitivity to light or glare and leads to eye straining
- Problems with night vision and multiple images or ghost images are seen. Near sightedness or myopia occurs .
- Clouding of the vision and changes in eye sight
- Irregular Astigmatism and photophobia
- Inability to wear contacts
Causes of Keratoconus :
The cause of Keratoconus is unknown. It may be due to some allergies , may be due to genetic disposition or due to magnesium deficiency as low magnesium can cause the thinning of elastic membrane of cornea. Excessive exposure to UV rays may lead to Keratoconus. Keratoconus is more common in persons with Down's Syndrome.
Keratoconus is generally due to imbalance of enzymes within the cornea. Excessive eye rubbing may lead to this disorder.
Treatment of Keratoconus :
The eye doctor may recommend gas permeable contact lenses , hybrid contact lenses , custom soft contact lenses or piggybacking contact lenses . Glasses or corrective lenses can treat keratoconus in mild cases. In some cases surgery such as intrastromal corneal ring segments, corneal cross linking and keratotomy can be performed. In most severe cases, corneal transplant is recommended.
Omega-3 fatty acids along with vitami B, vitami D2, vitami K2, Bilberry and lutein are recommended to be included in the diet. Vitamin C is very important in treating this disorder as it helps in building the collagen matrix which is the building block for cornea.
