***Kevin Spacey Is Proof That You Don't Need a Deep Voice to Have a Great Voice

Many men wish that the pitch of their speaking voice was deeper – similar to that of James Earl Jones or Vin Diesel. You don’t need to be a bass, however, to have a great speaking voice; and, Kevin Spacey is proof of it. Warm, resonant, rich and melodious, Spacey’s voice is very soothing and, given the right tone, sensual.

The voiceover for Honda, Spacey ‘sells’ their TV commercials because his voice instantly creates trust, integrity, class and value for their cars. Whether Honda’s vehicles are worthy of such praise is not the issue. Spacey’s voice makes it believable. That is all that does matter.

Years ago there was a commercial for the Chrysler Cordoba which featured the Mexican-bo
American actor Ricardo Montalban espousing the car’s beauty, reliability, comfort and, most importantly, its wonderful Corinthian leather. While he later admitted that Corinthian leather was just a term Chrysler coined, what sold that particular model was the voice of this very handsome, suave and sophisticated man. His voice was not particularly deep, but it was one that exuded warmth, sexuality and credibility. Women swooned over Montalban just by hearing him speak.

The one absolute in the voices of both Kevin Spacey and the late Ricardo Montalban is that they are warm. And, that is the one characteristic that you will discover in your voice when you allow your chest to become your primary sounding board.

Having the deepest voice is truly not what makes a great voice. A great voice can only occur when you take your voice ‘out of your throat,’ and use the tremendous cavity in your chest to power your sound. Only then will you discover good vocal resonance. Only then will you discover a voice that vibrates in your chest when you speak. It is those wonderful vibrations which can make your voice captivating.

Knowing how to use your voice to its optimum potential is a fantastic asset. The majority of the population, however, do not. Most people use only 4 of their 5 resonators or cavities to produce vocal sound – the throat, voice box, mouth and/or nose. If you are typical of the majority, then you are not aware that your largest resonator, your chest cavity, is responsible for the truly wonderful speaking voices you hear today, whether it is deep like that of Vin Diesel, or mid-range like that of George Clooney or Peter Coyote.
