If your husband cheated on you, then you know only too well how devastating this sort of news can be to your life and your emotional well-being. In an instant, your self-esteem and confidence can be shattered, the foundation of one of the most important parts of your life--your marriage--is suddenly cast into uncertainty, and an enormous geyser of emotions seems to erupt in your life.
Here are a few things you can do to help you cope with all the emotional aftermath.
First, allow yourself to feel the emotions. If you feel depressed, angry, frustrated, confused, or anything else, let that be okay. Expressing your emotions is a healthy and helpful way to heal the emotional pain you are going through.
If you bottle up your feelings and push those emotions deep down inside you, you’re setting yourself up for a lot of problems down the road. These emotions will find a time to come out, probably at a very inconvenient time or place. Do yourself a favor and let them run their course now instead of festering inside of your for weeks, months, or even years.
Now, of course you may not want to vent all your feelings at the exact moment they bubble up. For example, bursting into tears at work, probably isn’t going to do you much good. So you might want to set aside a specific time when you can let all your feelings out. If you schedule a time for this, you’ll find that you can also put a stop to those haunting images that keep running through your mind too.
Second, find something to be grateful for. I know that you are going through an unimaginably difficult time in your life right now, but you have to admit that you tend to feel better when you focus on good things.
In order to change your focus in life to better things than the pain that you’ve been through, start keeping a daily list of things that you are grateful for. These don’t have to be big things. Just start small and you’ll soon realize that despite the struggles in your marriage, there is probably a lot of good things in your life.
Maybe you’re grateful that you know how to read, that you have food to eat, or that you live in a day an age where people can easily access information on the internet. Once you start to feel grateful for the small things in your life, the good things will grow and you’ll find your life moving in a positive direction.
Third, seek professional help. If you are struggling with your marriage, considering divorce, or even wanting to save your marriage and recover from the affair, I strongly recommend that you get the help of a counselor, therapist, or other professional who can help you and your husband work out your differences and deal with the emotional baggage of the affair.
Try to find someone who feels right for you. If you are trying to save your marriage, find someone who you both can agree on.
Although it can be helpful to try to sort out the emotions on your own or with your husband, a professional can help the two of you see things in a new way or help by giving the two of you practical tips or exercises that can help improve communication or resolve conflicts.
