Almost everybody finds it utterly frustrating when faced with memory lapses. Being unable to remember faces, people, tasks, meetings, numbers, names and even words could really dampen conversations, relationships, and even self-confidence.
If you feel that your brain is a bit rusty, do not worry too much. Stress may exacerbate your situation. Instead of sulking on one corner and feeling sorry for yourself, you have to start doing something to allay the situation and try to bolster your brainpower. Even if you are in the ripe age of 80, there is still something you can do about forgetfulness and other brain woes.
Clear Your Pipes
The first thing you need to know is that oxygen is important in making sure that your brain functions properly and at its peak. Before you go gasping for more air, you need to understand that our blood is the one that is transporting oxygen in our brain. No amount of breathing air can help clear out the fogginess in your mind if your blood vessels are blocked. Thus, one way to help bolster your brainpower is to keep the blood vessels in which oxygenated blood travels through to your brain and other parts of your body clean and free from plaques and deposits.
Improve Your Cholesterol Levels
Many experts believe that consuming fatty foods, especially those that contain bad cholesterol is a sure way to have your blood vessels clogged in no time. To prevent this from happening, you need to lower your intake of bad cholesterol and increase your consumption of good cholesterol, which contains essential fatty acids. It is important to note that lowering the levels of your bad cholesterol is also important in maintaining a healthy heart.
Feed Your Mind
Did you know that 20% of the nutrients that you ingest goes to your brain? Although your brain comprises only 2% of your body mass, it uses up a big chunk of the vitamins and minerals in our food to ensure that it functions well. Thus, if your diet is nutrient-deficient, the deterioration of your brain functions will be faster.
In order to make your mind perform well just like the old times, you need the following nutrients:
Antioxidants
Antioxidants, which are found in most vegetables and fruits, help in fighting free radicals that are responsible for your brain cell's premature aging. If you want to boost your mental power, better eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables everyday and take multivitamin supplements.
Polyphenol is a type of antioxidant that protects your brain from degenerative neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease. Green tea is a major source of polyphenol.
Alpha Lipolic Acid
ALA, short for Alpha Lipolic Acid, plays a crucial role in the elimination of toxic materials and substances in the brain. Furthermore, this nutrient also helps in restoring glutathione, a substance that helps improve mental functions. Soybeans, flaxseed and walnuts are all rich in ALA.
Coenzyme Q10
This nutrient, which is more commonly known as CoQ10, averts the deterioration of the brain. You will find this substance in mackerel, fresh sardines, liver, eggs, spinach, broccoli, beef, pork and lamb.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids
If you want to boost your problem-solving skills and memory, improve your brain functions, and enhance communication between your brain cells, you better load up on Omega 3. This fatty acid also contains DHA, or Docosahexaenioc Acid, which helps fight free radicals and fuels the production of chemicals that are important in protecting brain health and preventing Alzheimer's disease. Good sources of Omega 3 are salmon, tuna, and other fish.
