It is a common problem for women to gain weight around menopause. For some, it will be the first time in their lives that they find it difficult to lose weight. For others who have always struggled with their weight, menopause makes losing weight even tougher!
Menopause itself does not actually cause weight gain. Some of the reasons women become fatter around that time are listed below.
First of all, metabolism slows down as people get older. Therefore, most people they gain weight as they get older.
As people grow older, they tend to eat more and exercise less.
Before menopause, women tend to carry their weight around their hips and thighs. After menopause, this changes so that they start carrying more excess weight around their stomach. This does not necessarily mean they have gained weight; it just means the weight has "shifted".
So what can you do to prevent this supposed menopause weight gain?
For starters, most women around this age complain that they have no time to exercise. In actual fact, they actually do have time to do so, but are too lazy, and instead give excuses.
Second of all, many women in their 20s and 30s are able to lose weight quickly at times if they stuck to a fad diet for long enough periods of time. However, as you get older, such fad diets become ineffective. Again, this is not necessarily a bad thing. It simply means that instead of turning to unhealthy fad diets, you have to do something much healthier and long-term focused.
The following five steps are crucial to help you lose the weight you gained after menopause.
Firstly, you should think long-term. Focus on changing your lifestyle and habits, and not just follow a program for a few weeks.
Second, you should always keep a food diary. Writing down what you are eating is one of the best weight loss strategies ever.
Do make small changes to your portion sizes to make the transition into a healthier lifestyle easier.
Remove temptation from your surrounding environment. If you are always surrounded by food at home, or you always have friends who ask you out to party and binge eat, you should get rid of these temptations.
Finally, no matter what happens, keep going strong. Many people fail to lose weight because they give up at the first sign of things not going accordingly to plan.
