What do musical legends like Mozart, Andre Previn, Stevie wonder and Julie Andrews have in common? Many people are bound to have different answers to this question. Most might suggest a great voice. Some might speak of their ability to write great music but very few will pick on their unique ability of perfect pitch. Also known as absolute pitch by some people—perfect pitch is the ability of people to recognize notes and their pitches by simply listening to them. Musicians who have this attribute are capable of identifying the pitches of notes without the use of references. It is abilities such as these that have made musical legends famous. A good example of the efficiency of perfect pitch is the life of Beethoven. There is none that can deny he was a great musician and composer. This feat is made even more remarkable because of the known that fact he achieved most of his best work while he was deaf. Up until his death he was still composing music despite his loss in hearing. And yet, despite this hearing defect, none of his many pieces had a wrong note. This is the beauty of perfect pitch. In many ways the ability of perfect pitch is a lot like learning a new language. As a result of this, musicians such as Stevie wonder are able to play perfectly without needing to read from guides. This becomes even more obvious when you consider the important fact that the abilities of language and sound recognition are found in the same region identified as belonging to the perfect pitch ability. For more information, see Learn Perfect Pitch. Being able to understand music and not merely listen to it is what has made the difference between ordinary musicians and true greats. At the age of 6, Mozart was already a competent violinist playing in many of the courts of Europe. His early exposure to music was key to the growth of his ability in this field. By the age of 30, Mozart was so familiar with the language of music that he had written as much as 40 symphony pieces. The same can be said of many of the popular musicians today who began their carrier as children. Today, most professional musicians aspire to achieve the ability of perfect pitch. Fortunately, the passage of this ability is not based on DNA. It is one that is learnt as people grow up.Today many people are able to gain this ability by using effective perfect pitch training methods. It is certainly worth thinking about. With ever lovely Julie Andrews at the helm, Sound of Music was released five decades ago.
