The idea of seeking therapy or counselling may be intimidating. Having reservations or feeling uneasy is completely normal, especially when opening up to someone new. Clearing up some common misconceptions surrounding the area of counselling and therapy may help put your mind at ease and feel more comfortable. Counselling is Only for ‘Major’ Issues or ‘Crazy’ People Therapy is designed to help give individuals the tools they need to navigate their unique struggles and challenges. Most people who seek therapy are ordinary people, facing everyday issues such as work-related stress, relationship conflict, past trauma, divorce, or depression. Counselling Will Always Take a Long Time to Become Effectiver Your therapist will have a unique treatment plan designed specifically for you, based on your reasons for therapy and goals. Most patients complete a treatment plan within 3-4 months. Unfortunately, not everyone fully heals from all trauma, so other treatment plans are extended. Counsellors Will Blame or Shame You A good counsellor will create a safe, nurturing, non-judgemental space for you to work through and resolve struggles and issues you are facing. If your therapist makes you feel guilty or at fault for what you are going through, this is not the person you should be working with. There’s No Point in Dwelling on the Pastr Good therapy is about healing past trauma and hurt, rather than sweeping it under the rug. Once past issues are resolved, you can move forward healthily. Admitting You Need Help and Going for Counselling Means You’re Weakr Being able to seek therapy shows strength, rather than weakness. It takes courage to be willing to open up and be vulnerable to better your mental health. The Therapist Has It All Worked Outr Therapists are ordinary people, just like you. They have their own growth jou eys to go through and are doing their own self-work. They don’t have all the answers. Therapy and counselling should be approached with an open mind. It may be an uncomfortable experience at first, but it is designed to help you learn more about yourself and help guide you toward living a better life.
