New Developments in the world of Male Pattern Baldness
Written by Dr Kapil Dua
• Recent studies have shown that the cure for male pattern baldness might lie at the cellular level. Scientists at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre discovered an interesting connection between the loss of hair and the body’s immune system. They have actually been able to link the stimulation of skin cells, which are responsible for the growth of hair with a special type of cells, which are associated with the immune system. In the study it was found that a particular type of white blood cells, known as macrophages and consume pathogens, could actually be the cause for the development of new stem cells in the skin.
The process is reasonably simple – the stem cells are connected at a time when they are still inactive. This process leads to the death of the macrophages and that stimulates the stem cells linked to hair, to grow yet again. The leading doctors in this study have spoken at length about macrophages and how they originate during period of pregnancy. They have also made it clear that these macrophages can activate the stem cells of the hair follicles in the non-inflamed skin.
The discovery was made quite accidently, when the doctors were working with mice, in which they were trying to regrow hair after they had been given drugs to fight inflammation. It was at this time that they discovered that when the skin cells were dormant, a small portion of macrophages died naturally. With these macrophages dying and new skin cells being born, hair growth suddenly became a possibility. Now the same process is being modified to suit human beings.
• While it might sound like a weird concept, but the latest in the world of tackling male pattern hair loss are head tattoos. The technical term for the procedure is scalp pigmentation and the process is completed by putting several little pricks on the head. What this does is create a gentle hairline and covers up the bald areas. Normal tattoo ink tends to fade over time and often even changes shades. However, the head tattoos are made with a special ink that is made from charcoal. Not only does this give a true black colour, but also does not fade with time. The needle used for this process is much smaller than the one used for a normal tattoo process. The end result will look quite smooth and normal. As a matter of fact, the final look will be quite similar to a buzz cut.
However, this method will not give permanent results, and the colour of this tattoo too will fade over time. There are several people in the world, who are facing hair loss, but might not be ideal candidates for a hair transplant surgery, because they do not have a proper donor or recipient area. Then there would also be those who are worried about getting a surgical procedure done to regain hair. For all such people, this would be a good enough option.
With more and more studies and researches being conducted in this field, there is more than just a glimmer of hope for those who have lost their hair to pattern baldness!
