No matter how driven or goal-oriented you are, do you ever have trouble staying on track? Does your mind wander off or are you easily distracted by the phone, emails, the smell of snacks in the break room, or just about anything else like that?

If you’re thinking that this applies to you, then a little issue called focus might be one you need to give some attention to. What is focus? It’s easy to think of it in the sense of clear vision, like focusing a camera or a pair of binoculars. I want you to also think of it in the scope of success. In this success scope, focus is also related to vision. The vision here though is more of the so-called task at hand.

Are successful people able to achieve and maintain focus? They sure do seem good at it, don’t they? How can we do that? We may not think of comparing ourselves to a world class athlete or even a Broadway actress (who also must have incredible focus to be at the top of her game). That aside, focus is still very critical in the equation of success. Is there a secret to focus? Is there a steady diet of ginseng or ginkgo that we have to eat? There are some secrets to good focus and I’m going to share them with you.

First though, I want you to think about things that distract you. The point is real simple here. We all have distractions and, depending on how we pay attention to them, they can really take away from our success. What if you could improve your focus and start making those same distractions have less impact on you and what you should be doing?

The first step to better focus is to manage the distractions in your life. What you want to do is to isolate your distractions into smaller segments of time in which you will specifically handle them. An example of this is setting up two time slots each day where you check messages and then return the most important calls. When you get to a point where you’re not diving over your desk to retrieve phone calls, their impact as distractions will be less.

Another way to improve focus is to think and act in the present moment. Stop dwelling on what happened yesterday or last week because you can’t very well change it. Also avoid thinking ahead too much. Are you really impacting what happens tomorrow or next week by planning ahead? Successful people realize that if they focus on doing the right things today, tomorrow will take care of itself.

Improving your focus is not going to be an ove
ight transformation. Start by focusing on one day at a time and see what happens after you do that for a month or two. Trust me, your overall focus will be better and you will be more successful as a result of it! n
