Today, I want to talk to you about a topic that could be harming your business if you’re not doing it – I want to talk about how you can be more effective in business by DELEGATING and enjoy the process!

Question: do you enjoy delegating or does the thought of it have you scurrying to hide under your desk?

Hint: this applies whether you have an actual staff or a team who you outsource to!

If hiding under the desk would be your preferred option, then Houston we have a problem!

The challenge is you know you have a lot to do in your business and the truth is you can’t do it alone. Yet when delegating comes up, many women in business will shrink away from it, feeling very uncomfortable about letting go or the perception that they will lose control.

And I want to talk about how important it is because if you do avoid it, you are doing yourself a massive disservice and I want to show you how you can embrace delegating!

Delegating means you can get more done and so it’s a gift. Very few see it that way so here are 3 ways you can build up your delegating muscle:

Step 1: Start off small

Nobody expects you to hand over a huge project without any prior experience or knowledge of whether the person you’re delegating to can handle it so start off by delegating low risk items

Step 2: Establish expectations between you and the person you’re delegating to – don’t just hand off work and assume it will be done exactly to your specification and the way you would do it. So be clear about what you’re looking for and make sure you are both comfortable with the approach and agreed timescales

Step 3: Stay open-minded. If a piece of work has not been done to your standard, do not use this as an excuse to write off delegating and instead hold everything close to your chest thinking “I knew I was right not to delegate!”. Everyone has a learning curve including you so see this as an opportunity to learn.

When I first started managing people, I was very protective of my work. But as my workload and responsibility grew, I knew that the secret to my success would be through other people helping me. It took time but I started seeing it as a gift and I promise, you will to!

OK, so let’s recap the 3 secrets to effective delegating when you hate to let go:

1) Start off small

2) Clarify expectations

3) Stay open-minded

So here’s what I want you to do now. Look at what you have on your plate currently and identify one piece of work you could delegate and decide who and how you’re going to delegate this to using the 3 steps outlined.

Leave a comment below and let me know what action you took and how you feel about it – it’s fine if you feel a little uncomfortable – just go with it!

I promise you this will be one of the most liberating things you will ever do. When you’re bringing your mission to life, you cannot do it alone and by building your delegation muscle, you are helping others step up and be part of your vision. What an amazing gift you are giving to them and yourself…so it’s time to embrace it!

Blessings,

My business gives me the opportunity to work with many wonderful people as a client and as a supplier of services. Some time back however, I found myself doubting. I have been doubting other people and their integrity. I found myself in the position where I was filtering all my interactions through the polarising lens of a few souring experiences. In this space and sense of doubting others I had felt unable to create words or metaphors which could possibly be of service to you. So what changed? Frankly, Brett Godfrey did.

In the last week I have worked with 2 different people who are struggling to get their message across. They each have an idea and are being blocked by another persons’ apparent stubbornness. In each case when they analysed what was happening they discovered that the other person was not in fact being stubborn, but they were reacting emotionally to an inexpertly delivered message. What to do if you are being blocked.

We cover the topic of Locus of Control in our Leadership programs, so it is 2nd nature for me to take full ownership for whatever outcomes I am creating in my life. After all why teach it if I am not living it? REcently I have had some events seemingly “happen to me” which rocked my belief in my own control over the results I get. Before I get on with that part of the story a short discussion on what exactly is Locus of Control and how can we use it…rnr

Several of my coaching clients have requested support with either time management or work life balance When we have a discovery conversation on their challenge there is generally much more to discuss on the topic of insufficient delegation. They're keeping excessive responsibilities, authority and duty to their and their company's detriment. Consequently they under perform at their own level. They hold themselves back or suffer from a lack of balance in their lives with too many hours at work.
