I don't know if it's because of the weight I that have lost recently that I am more aware, but I can't help but notice the composition of people all around us.

I went out for a long walk yesterday on a nice summer evening and noticed how few other people were out doing the same - yet there were lots of people in cars around hardly able to move in them. I even seen a couple squeezed in to the front of a small car outside the chip shop battling for elbow room to get around their ice cream cones. There weren't any kids in the park running around or playing football?

I went on trip to Glasgow last week on the ferry - queues of people hardly able to walk filling up trays with fast food and sugary cakes and desserts that weren't cheap either.

There were shopping malls full of overweight people.

Have things changed that much since I was young? Gaming consoles, multimedia overload, fast and junk food immediately available everywhere.

I think things are a lot different now and is the nation's health heading for a landslide with the expense and other consequences of it all?

A report recently by the National Obesity Forum is estimating that half the nation will be obese by 2015 and some feel that this may even be underestimated.

Is this being addressed by the government, media advertising and organisations or will it creep up on the nation slowly the same way waistlines are? I don't think they are going to act too quickly!

Do individuals therefore need to stop and think "am I contributing to the problem ahead?"

Do those involved in fitness need be proactive by reaching out to others, offering help and support, doing something to encourage health and wellbeing ahead of those organisations who should be?

What needs to be done in order to look after the generation(s) coming behind us - before the fast approaching big fat rock hits the planet?
