If you're looking for a way to simplify your life and reduce your worries, getting your finances organized should be at the top of your "to-do" list. There's nothing quite as stressful as not knowing where all your bills are, or even not knowing exactly how much money you need each month. Instead of constantly worrying about your finances, why not spend a bit of time getting everything organized? Not only will you be able to pay your bills and take care of your finances in a much faster fashion, but you'll have more peace of mind.
Choose a Storage Area
Unfortunately, many people don't take the time to designate one particular storage area for all their financial-related documents. As a result, important papers can get lost and you might even forget to pay a bill on time. Decide on one storage area for your financial papers, such as a filing cabinet or a specific drawer. Then, take the time to gather all your financial papers and records from their existing storage areas. You might be surprised how many papers you really have, once you gather them all together.
Once you have your papers gathered together, sort them out carefully. The goal is to organize them in a fashion that works best for you. In some cases, an accordion-style file can work well, providing you with a separate pocket for each month of year. Or, you might prefer using separate file folders for different kinds of financial records. The important thing is to find a method that works well for you.
Create Your Monthly Budget
Once your financial papers and bills are all gathered together in one place, you'll find it much easier to sit down and develop a monthly budget. Using a notebook or computer spreadsheet application, itemize each of your monthly expenses, as well as when they are due. Then, total these expenses to see how much you normally spend each month. If your expenses exceed your monthly income, you'll have to find some ways to cut your monthly spending. On the other hand, if your income exceeds your expenses, you'll have a better idea as to how much money each month you should be saving or investing.
Designate Specific Days to Pay Bills
If you currently have a rather haphazard method for paying bills, this could be causing you a lot of unnecessary stress. Instead, now that you have your expenses clearly itemized along with their due dates, you can designate certain days of the week for paying your bills. The day after you get paid would be a good choice, so that you can get your bills taken care of before your money gets inadvertently spent. If your bank offers online bill paying, this can make paying your bills extremely quick and easy. Of course, one of the easiest ways to make bill paying easier is to reduce your level of debt. By concentrating on paying off credit card and loan balances, you will eventually have fewer bills to pay each month, saving you time and money.
